  • When and where are tryouts?

spring Tryouts will be held April 28-29 at Christenberry Fieldhouse. Doors for check will open at 9:30 AM on April 28.

  • How do I register for tryouts?

All Applications must be completed by Friday, April 28th by 5:00 PM

You may wish to save a copy of all paperwork to bring with you on the day of tryouts.

  • Is there a fee for tryouts?

No.

  • What eligibility requirements must be met?

You must be at least a part-time student in good standing at Augusta University or have an application on file with the Office of Academic Admissions.

If selected, you are required to pass a physical with University Doctors.

Team members are required to maintain a 2.0 GPA.

  • What should I wear to tryouts?

Day 1: Form fitting workout type clothes (Sports Bra and Spandex are preferred) – in the Colors Navy, gray or white,

Day 2 (tryouts) - ALL BLACK FORM FITTING WORKOUT TYPE CLOTHES (SPORTS BRA AND SPANDEX ARE PREFERRED)

Please do not wear jewelry or come with long nails. Previous AU cheerleaders should not wear AU cheer logos.

Appropriate cheer shoes are needed for stunting.

  • How should my appearance look?

Hair half up half down with bow tails facing the back of your head.

No glitter

  • What will tryouts be like?

Similar to an open workshop/practice. We will review the Chants and Fight Song and you will showcase your Gameday skills, jumps, tumbling, and stunting skills. You will also complete a fitness test (timed mile run, etc.)

  • Where can I find the material for tryouts?

Material for tryouts will be taught at cheer & stunt Clinics. You can also gain access to the tryout material by submitting your online application.

  • How will I be scored?

For Stunts, Tumbling, Chants, Fight Song and Jumps will be scoring based on motion technique, motion placement, showmanship, voice/projection, knowledge of material, stunting technique, flyer flexibility, stunt execution.

  • Can my roommate, friend, or parents come watch tryouts?

No, tryouts are not open to spectators.

  • When are the games?

Volleyball Games typically start September. We typically attend 4-5 Home Volleyball games. Basketball Games are typically held Mondays through Thursday’s beginning at 5:00 p.m. and on Saturday’s beginning at 1:00 p.m. Double headers usually last for four hours. We cheer at all home basketball games and selected away games and tournaments. Games begin in November and run through March.

  • When are practices?

Practices are held on Monday, Tuesday & Wednesday beginning at 7 PM during the fall. Cheerleaders are expected to schedule class and work around the practice times determined by the coaches. Following the selection of our Nationals team members, athletes who will not be competing will only be REQUIRED to practice the night before the next upcoming game DURING THE SPRING SEMESTER ONLY.

  • Are scholarships available?

Not at this time. In lieu of scholarships, the university provides approximately $2000 per cheerleader in materials and services. In addition, cheerleaders receive priority class registration - meaning they get to register for classes before the rest of the student body.

  • What is the out of pocket expense?

Each cheerleader will have to pay $100 in by May 25 following accepting your spot on the team. You may make payments as long as it is arranged with a coach! This will go towards practice wear, clinics, bows, shoes and other personal gear expenses. All other expenses are covered so long as you participate in fundraisers.

  • Is there a co-ed team?

Currently we are a small co-ed team, meaning we allow no more than 5 males on our team.

  • If I make the team, what is the time commitment?

You will be expected to practice at least 2 days a week for 2-3 hours each. You will also be required to complete team workouts, study hours, service projects, and attend promotional events, games, and competitions. On average, it is a 10-15 hour per week commitment.

  • Does the team practice on hard floor or spring floor?

We practice on dead mat. In preparation for CANAM CHEER LTD Collegiate Open Championships, we will practice on Spring Floor the week prior to the competition. All skills at tryouts will need to be thrown on dead mat.

  • What is the coach looking for in a candidate?

We are looking for well-rounded individuals who can work hard and well with others. Putting the team first is very import to the success of the program. In addition we are looking for Strong stunting technique, flexibility, great physical fitness, precise motions, handsprings/tucks/and above, enthusiastic sideline presence, high academic achievement, coachability, commitment to team, and strong character.

  • What if I can’t make the scheduled tryout?

You may submit a video tryout or request a private tryout. Both will need to be completed by Friday, April 27 at 10:00 PM. Tryout material rules still apply.

  • Can I tryout via Video?

Yes! You will need to submit an online application and include the following items in your video:

· Short introduction

· Chants

· Fight Song

· Examples of Standing Tumbling (if any)

· Examples of Running Tumbling (if any)

· 3 consecutive and connect jumps (to tumbling If you can)

· Stunts

o Toss extension your choice dismount

o One single leg stunt of your choice (elite level skills are encouraged)
