Book Design and Advanced Creative Writing
I implemented the collection of poems I wrote for the latter as the basis of my final project for the former. A plethora of techniques and mediums were incorporated, including:
✶ Coptic bookbinding
✶ Ink, stamps, wax thread, book board, and paper/fabric from a free bin at an estate sale
✶ Adobe InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop
The photographs included were all taken during my semester in Orvieto, Italy, with figures and circles as the subject. I edited the pictures and formatted the pages using the design softwares mentioned above. Construction of the book was fully by hand.
Reconstruction of a Book
By rethinking the confines of what a book can be and how readers will interact with it accordingly, I deconstructed and reconstructed a book, utilzing:
✶ An anthology of poetry and poetics, discarded by the campus library
✶ Black cardstock and glue
✶ Metal binder rings
My reconstruction was a split page, build-your-own-poem book with countless poetic possibilities. I included stanzas cut from famous poems with themes of death, aging, and animals.
Zine
I crafted a bicolor zine based on an aspect of my daily life, using:
✶ Adobe InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop
✶ Kodak EasyShare c310 Digital Camera
✶ Printed paper, cut and folded
My zine shared a rhyming story of the many things one can do in my car, affectionately named Meursault. It included photographs of various objects that live in my vehicle, all edited with the aforementioned design softwares.
