As an art teacher, my goal is to enable my students to express themselves and blossom into creative minds. Art goes beyond the aesthetically pleasing. It's about realizing a vision, finding solutions to achieve the intended result and learning that mistakes are unavoidable but also welcomed. Art is a discipline where the progress and improvements are easy to notice, which helps to reinforce a growth mindset.
I like to involve the students in their own education to make them aware of their learning, so I like to have students self-assess their production as they are completing it. Also, I like to give them options to choose from. In a school setting, I have to impose some rules, but I like to give them as much artistic freedom as I can. The opportunity to make their own decision is more engaging to the students. It allows them to shine and create more original and personal pieces.
I have high expectations for students as artists and learners. Every student has a great potential that can be triggered by challenging them. Students have different paces, tastes, skills and motivations that must be considered in order to hold their interest and succeed in a project. What my experience has taught me so far is that engaged students create surprising compositions that exceed anything I could have anticipated.
