A mastering engineer is the final stop in the music production chain, before the tracks go onto a DSP (Distribution Streaming Platform, such as Spotify) or printed on a CD. They are the last pair of ears!
The job outline: Preserve the vibe, hardwork and art, whilst preparing it for different listening methods. What sounds great on the mix engineers setup may not translate to YouTube very well. You need something a bit more robust and ready for both the expensive audiophile setups, and the £5 bluetooth speakers.
Changes mastering engineers make are minimal. It's a lot of hard-work to add a certain colour or 'pop' to a song, without changing the original tone. Some engineers are extremely secretive about their process for this reason; the mysterious dark art of mastering.
But not me! Be as nosy as you like! I'm happy for the client to be as hands on as they want. Ask all the questions you can!
I would love to mix your song! Whether I can or not fully depends on my current work load.
