If you want a closed-back design that isolates sound for loud environments and precise studio tracking, choose Audio Technica Studio Monitor; if you need a wider soundstage with flat frequency response for mixing and long sessions at home, choose JOYO Studio Monitor Headphones. Both are wired options built for serious listening, but they solve different problems. One is designed to keep the outside world out while you focus on the details of a mix or a recording session. The other is engineered to let air in just enough so your ears don't feel trapped, offering a more natural spread of instruments across the stereo field. Neither product claims to be a magic wand, but each has a specific strength that aligns with how you intend to use them. If you are looking for the best in-ear earbuds for movies, neither of these will fit that niche since both are over-ear models. However, if you are setting up a home studio or simply want a headset for movies that delivers accurate audio without breaking the bank, these two compete directly in their respective lanes.
• Audio Technica Studio Monitor: Strengths include its 40mm drivers tuned for excellent mid-range definition and a circumaural design that offers superior sound isolation in loud settings. Its biggest trade-off is the closed-back nature which limits the perceived width of the soundstage compared to open designs. This pick is for engineers who need to track vocals or record in noisy rooms.
• JOYO Studio Monitor Headphones: Strengths feature large 50mm drivers with a semi-open architecture that creates a wide, natural soundstage ideal for mixing decisions. Its main compromise is sound leakage, making it unsuitable for close-miking or extremely loud environments. This pick is for producers and podcasters who spend hours editing content in quiet spaces.
• Who Each Pick Is For: Audio Technica suits the mobile engineer or the person working in a busy environment, while JOYO fits the stationary mixer who prioritizes spatial accuracy over isolation.
The Audio Technica ATH-M30 is built around the concept of precision in difficult conditions. Its design centers on a circumaural shape that contours tightly around the ears. This physical characteristic is not just about comfort; it is an engineering choice to provide excellent sound isolation. When you are working in a room with traffic noise, HVAC systems humming, or bandmates practicing nearby, this isolation becomes critical. You can hear the subtle nuances of a vocal take or a drum hit without the background noise bleeding into your perception. The closed-back dynamic driver system ensures that sound stays inside the ear cups, preventing any leakage that might disturb others or get picked up by sensitive microphones during recording.
At the heart of the performance are the 40 mm drivers equipped with rare earth magnets and copper-clad aluminum wire voice coils. These components work together to deliver enhanced detail and excellent mid-range definition. In practical terms, this means when you are listening to a mix, the vocals and guitars sit clearly in the middle of the spectrum without being muddy. The frequency response spans from 15 Hz to 22,000 Hz, covering the full audible range needed for professional monitoring. Whether you are checking low-end bass frequencies or high-hat cymbals, the drivers handle the input power of up to 1,300 mW with stability. This makes the unit robust enough for demanding studio tracking where dynamic peaks occur frequently.

This headphone is explicitly designed to excel for studio tracking, mixing, and field recording. If your workflow involves moving between locations or working in less-than-perfect acoustic environments, the collapsible design adds a layer of convenience. You can fold the headphones down for space-saving portability, slipping them into the included protective carrying pouch. The single-side cable exit keeps the cord manageable, reducing tangles as you move around a studio desk or a live venue. The weight of 220 grams, excluding the cable and connector, strikes a balance between durability and wearability. It uses an aluminum enclosure and black finish, suggesting a build quality intended to withstand the rigors of daily professional use. If you are a musician needing a reliable headset for movies or practice in a garage, this model offers the isolation required to stay focused on the audio itself.
However, there are reasons to skip this model if your primary goal is pure spatial awareness in a dead-quiet room. Because the design is fully closed, the soundstage is naturally narrower than what you might get from an open-back alternative. While the mid-range is defined, the sense of depth and width can feel slightly compressed compared to semi-open designs. If you spend all day mixing in a treated, silent studio and find yourself craving a more "airy" presentation where instruments seem to float rather than sit inside your head, this closed architecture might feel limiting. It is a tool for control and isolation, not for expanding your sonic horizon.
The JOYO JMH-03 takes a different approach by prioritizing the accuracy of the stereo image and the comfort of long-duration wear. Its defining feature is the semi-open acoustic design. Unlike the fully sealed Audio Technica, this design allows a controlled amount of air to pass through the ear cups. This architectural shift delivers a wider, more natural soundstage. When you are mixing a track, you can clearly perceive stereo positioning, reverb depth, and frequency balance. This clarity helps you make better decisions about panning and effects because the audio feels more like it is coming from speakers in a room rather than vibrating directly against your eardrums. It is specifically targeted at mixing engineers, podcasters, and audio creators who need to hear the true character of their recordings without artificial coloration.
Driving this performance are custom-tuned 50mm drivers that offer a flat, uncolored frequency response ranging from 15Hz to 28kHz. The jump in size from the 40mm drivers found in many competitors contributes to a richer bass response and greater dynamic headroom. With a power handling capability of 1,600mW, these headphones remain clear and distortion-free even when monitoring high-dynamic-range signals. This is particularly useful for guitarists, bassists, and producers who work with heavy electronic drums or complex arrangements. The impedance is set at 55 ohms, which is higher than entry-level models. This higher impedance delivers more precise driver control and tighter bass response, ensuring that every nuance of tone is accurately reproduced when connected to professional audio interfaces, mixers, or guitar amps.
Comfort is another major pillar for this product. It features a fully metal adjustable headband and memory protein foam earpads. The combination of materials distributes pressure effectively, allowing for extended wear without fatigue. The semi-open design further reduces ear pressure buildup, making it comfortable for 3-4 hours of mixing, editing, or practice sessions. This is a significant advantage for content creators who spend long hours at a computer. The dual-sided detachable cables add versatility; the Y-shaped cable connects to both earcups and provides approximately 3 meters of reach. This length gives you freedom to move around the studio or on stage for musicians. The gold-plated connectors ensure reliable signal transmission, and the inclusion of both 3.5mm and 6.35mm adapters means universal compatibility with computers, smartphones, amplifiers, and mixers.
That said, the semi-open design comes with a specific limitation regarding isolation. Sound leakage occurs from the earcups, meaning someone sitting next to you might hear what you are playing, and external noise can enter your ears. Consequently, these are not ideal for vocal recording or close-miking in a non-treated environment. If you are trying to record vocals while wearing these, the microphone might pick up the playback from the headphones, causing feedback or phase issues. For those scenarios, a closed-back model is strictly better. Additionally, while the build feels durable with its metal headband, the lack of active noise cancellation or deep sealing means it is not suitable for travel on a plane or in a very noisy cafe. It is a workstation tool, not a travel companion.

In my opinion, I would buy the JOYO Studio Monitor Headphones for my personal home studio setup. The semi-open design offers a level of transparency and spatial accuracy that is essential for modern mixing workflows. While the Audio Technica model is undeniably a rugged workhorse for tracking and isolation, the ability to hear the "air" in a mix and the natural soundstage provided by the JOYO model leads to better creative decisions. For watching movies or casual listening, the wider soundstage also makes the experience more immersive, feeling less claustrophobic than the closed-back alternative. However, if your primary need is to record vocals in a noisy room, the Audio Technica remains the necessary tool for that specific job. Ultimately, for the average producer or enthusiast seeking the best in-ear earbuds equivalent for over-ear monitoring, the JOYO's balance of comfort and flat response wins out.
Both models are capable, but the JOYO's semi-open design often provides a more cinematic, spacious experience that mimics speaker setups, whereas the Audio Technica offers a more focused, isolated listen.
The JOYO headphones have a 55-ohm impedance, which works best with dedicated audio interfaces or headphone amplifiers for optimal volume and control, though they can connect to standard devices. The Audio Technica's 47-ohm impedance is generally easier to drive from standard outputs.
No, the JOYO headphones are not suitable for recording vocals due to sound leakage from the semi-open design. The Audio Technica headphones are designed for studio tracking and are better suited for this purpose because they prevent sound from escaping the ear cups.
The Audio Technica features a single-side cable exit with a straight 3-meter cable, while the JOYO uses a dual-sided detachable Y-cable that connects to both earcups, offering flexibility for multi-device setups.
