If you want lightweight wired earphones for running, choose Audio Technica ATH-CM707; if you need over-ear sound isolation for home listening, choose Sony. The ATH-CM707 has a compact wired design and a 15.4 mm driver, while the Sony MDR7506 is a larger, closed over-ear wired headphone with 40 mm drivers. Neither product offers Bluetooth multipoint, so neither is a fit if wireless phone-and-watch switching is essential.
Audio Technica ATH-CM707 vs Sony at a Glance
• Sony MDR7506: Over-ear design, 40 mm dynamic drivers, and sound isolation; the trade-off is a larger fit than compact in-ear earphones.
• For running: The ATH-CM707 is the more practical of these two form factors to consider, though its wired connection still means managing a cable.
• For home or desk listening: Sony’s over-ear design and 3.5 mm connection suit a listener who wants full-size headphones without wireless features.
• Choose the ATH-CM707 if you want compact wired earphones; choose Sony if you prefer over-ear headphones and sound isolation.
The ATH-CM707 is the more compact pick here. Its aluminum-alloy housing is described as lightweight, and the product information lists a weight of 6 g. That makes the earphones easier to carry than an over-ear set, while the included pouch gives them a dedicated place in a bag or pocket. The pouch has a divider, and the cord is designed to resist tangling. Those details matter for everyday carrying, not just storage.
Its audio design includes a 15.4 mm driver and a resonance duct intended to support fuller low-frequency playback. The listed impedance is 14 ohms. The earphones connect by wire through a 3.5 mm jack, and the main cord is 0.6 m with a separate 0.6 m extension cord. That split gives some flexibility: use the shorter lead when it suits the device and add the extension when more reach is needed. It does not, however, remove the need to connect physically to a source.

The fit-related design includes an elastic elastomer bushing and a crank treatment intended to help limit shifting of the listening point. Ear pads are included. For someone considering wired earphones for running, those details are more relevant than the larger Sony’s over-ear construction, but a cable remains a practical drawback during movement. The listed sound control is sound isolation, not active noise cancellation.
Who should skip it: Skip the ATH-CM707 if you specifically need Bluetooth, multipoint connections, or a cable-free running setup.
Sony: Who It's For
Sony’s MDR7506 is a conventional over-ear option rather than a small earphone. It has 40 mm dynamic drivers and a listed frequency range of 10 Hz to 20 kHz. Its over-ear placement and sound-isolation control point toward listening where a larger headphone fit is welcome, such as at a desk or at home. The product information lists a 3.5 mm jack, so this is a wired headphone, not a wireless alternative.
That distinction is important because the Sony listing’s feature text mentions Bluetooth headphones for kids, but the product information identifies the MDR7506 connectivity as wired. For this comparison, the reliable match for the named model is the wired 3.5 mm connection. There is no listed Bluetooth multipoint feature, battery, or wireless mode to rely on. The over-ear design can suit a listener who prefers headphones around the ears, but it is less compact than the ATH-CM707’s in-ear format.
Who should skip it: Skip the Sony if you need compact earphones for running or expect Bluetooth and multipoint connectivity.
• Best fit for a compact wired setup → Audio Technica ATH-CM707. Its in-ear format, 6 g listed weight, and carrying pouch make it the smaller option.
• Best fit for over-ear listening → Sony. The MDR7506 is explicitly an over-ear headphone, while the ATH-CM707 sits in the ear.
• Best for a running use case between these two → Audio Technica ATH-CM707. Its lighter, compact design is a more sensible starting point, although the cable still needs consideration.
• Best for a longer cord when needed → Audio Technica ATH-CM707. Its 0.6 m main cord can be paired with a 0.6 m extension.
• Best for someone seeking a larger driver specification → Sony. It lists 40 mm dynamic drivers; the ATH-CM707 lists a 15.4 mm driver.
• Best for sound isolation as a stated feature → Tie. Both products list sound isolation, and neither sheet specifies active noise cancellation.
• Best for Bluetooth multipoint → Neither. Both are identified as wired products, and neither lists multipoint support.
• Best for a pouch included in the stated package → Audio Technica ATH-CM707. Its listed accessories include a protective case and extension cord.
Before choosing either model for running, think about the cable first. Both products are described as wired and list a 3.5 mm connection. The ATH-CM707’s shorter main lead and included extension offer some flexibility in cable length, but it is still connected to the listening device. The Sony’s over-ear design does not change that basic limitation. If your running setup depends on wireless pairing or connecting to two devices at once, neither set matches that requirement based on the available specifications.
Fit is another practical difference. The Audio Technica is an in-ear design with elastomer bushings, ear pads, and a feature intended to reduce shifting of the listening point. The Sony is an over-ear design with sound isolation listed. Those are different wearing experiences, not interchangeable versions of the same shape. Consider which style you usually find comfortable and secure before focusing on driver size.
Finally, don’t treat driver dimensions as a direct quality score. The ATH-CM707 has a 15.4 mm driver and a resonance duct designed to support low-frequency playback; Sony lists 40 mm dynamic drivers and a 10 Hz to 20 kHz frequency range. These specifications describe different aspects of each design, but they do not by themselves settle which one will sound better to you. If your deciding factor is value, check the current price on Amazon using the page’s price button and weigh it against the wired connection, fit, and included accessories you actually need.
In my opinion, I would choose the Audio Technica ATH-CM707 for running between these two because it is the lighter, more compact in-ear option and includes a cord-length extension. That is a relative choice, not a claim that it is cable-free or made specifically for sports. Sony is the better fit for someone who wants over-ear headphones for stationary listening. For my running use case, the ATH-CM707’s form factor is the more convincing match.
The ATH-CM707 is the more compact, lighter option, so its in-ear form is the more natural fit for this use case. Both are wired, though, so neither provides a cable-free running setup.
Do the ATH-CM707 or Sony MDR7506 support Bluetooth multipoint?
Neither product sheet lists active noise cancellation. Both list sound isolation, but that does not mean either one has electronic noise cancelling.
The available information identifies the Sony as a wired over-ear headphone with 40 mm dynamic drivers; it does not list spatial-audio or gaming features. Its over-ear design and cable make it less suited to running than a compact in-ear option, but neither product is specified as a spatial-audio gaming headphone.
