If you want lag-free, immersive gaming audio with studio-grade sound and 15 hours of battery life on laptops or PCs, choose Audio-Technica ATH-G1WL; if you need a lightweight, open-ear solution specifically designed for clear TV dialogue while keeping your ears aware of the room, choose Avantree Medley Air. These two devices serve completely different masters: one is built for deep immersion in competitive digital worlds, while the other prioritizes comfort and speech clarity during long television viewing sessions.
• Audio-Technica ATH-G1WL: Delivers high-fidelity 7.1 surround sound and zero-lag wireless connectivity via 2.4GHz RF, but it is strictly limited to PC/Mac use and cannot connect to consoles like PlayStation or Xbox.
• Avantree Medley Air: Features an open-ear design that lets you hear surroundings clearly while watching TV, yet it offers only 8 hours of battery life and lacks active noise cancellation.
• Best for gamers who demand precision audio and microphone clarity for live streaming or team communication.
• Best for viewers who wear glasses, need to hear family members nearby, or want to avoid ear fatigue during movie marathons.
The Audio-Technica ATH-G1WL is engineered for a specific type of user: the serious gamer or content creator who needs absolute audio fidelity and responsiveness. This headset leverages a 2.4GHz wireless connection rather than standard Bluetooth to ensure there is no perceptible lag between what happens on screen and what you hear. In a competitive environment where split-second reactions matter, this RF technology provides a dependable link that avoids the interference common in crowded Wi-Fi environments. The large-diameter 45mm drivers are tuned to deliver studio-quality sound, which translates into a rich, detailed audio landscape that can make a difference in spotting enemies or appreciating cinematic soundtracks within games.
Comfort is another major pillar for this device. With a strong, lightweight construction and breathable pads, it is designed to withstand even the longest gaming marathons without causing pressure points. The earcups and headband pad are detachable, allowing for easy replacement if they eventually wear out, which suggests a focus on longevity. Furthermore, the inclusion of a flexible, detachable boom microphone with highly directional pickup ensures that your voice comes through crystal-clear to teammates, a non-negotiable feature for anyone engaging in multiplayer coordination or live streaming. You also get a microphone monitoring function, allowing you to hear your own voice as others hear it, which helps prevent shouting or mumbling during intense moments.

However, this powerhouse has distinct limitations that define who should skip it. It is not compatible with game consoles like the PS4 or Xbox, nor does it support HDMI connections directly; it relies entirely on a USB Type-A connector for laptops, PCs, and Macs. If your primary setup involves a console living room rig, this headset will not work. Additionally, while the battery lasts approximately 15 hours on a full charge, recharging takes a significant seven hours. If you plan to use this for flights or travel where charging opportunities might be sporadic, the long recharge time could be a bottleneck. It is a dedicated desktop tool, not a universal companion.
The Avantree Medley Air takes a radically different approach by focusing on the television experience rather than gaming. Its defining characteristic is the open-ear design, which sits just outside the ear canal rather than sealing it off. This allows you to hear TV audio clearly while remaining fully aware of your surroundings. For many people, especially those who share a living space, this is a game-changer. You can enjoy the volume you need for the show without disturbing others, and conversely, you can still hear someone knocking on the door or a child calling for you without taking the device off. This makes it particularly suitable for users who wear glasses, as the design avoids the clamping force that often creates pain behind the temples after an hour of wear.
Sound quality here is tuned specifically for clarity of speech rather than bass-heavy immersion. The audio drivers are calibrated to enhance dialogue, making conversations in news programs, dramas, and documentaries easier to follow without cranking up the overall volume. This is achieved through air conduction technology that effectively transmits higher treble frequencies, ensuring that every word lands distinctly. The device includes a charging dock that doubles as a Bluetooth transmitter, simplifying the setup process significantly. You simply connect the dock to your TV via Optical (TOSLINK) or AUX (3.5mm) ports, and you are ready to go without needing complex apps or Wi-Fi configurations. The ability to pass optical audio through to a soundbar means other family members can listen through the home speakers while you use the earbuds privately.
Despite its comfort advantages, the Avantree Medley Air has trade-offs that limit its versatility. It is not designed for heavy bass or immersive gaming experiences; the frequency range caps at 20,000 Hz, which is standard for speech and general media but lacks the extended highs found in high-end audiophile gear. The battery life is rated at up to 8 hours, which is half that of the Audio-Technica option, and continuous high-volume usage will shorten this further. There is also no active noise cancellation, so if you are trying to watch a movie in a noisy airport terminal or a busy café, the open design will let ambient noise flood in. Finally, the headband protrudes in the back, which may cause discomfort if you try to recline while wearing them, making it less ideal for lying down on a couch or bed.
• Best for battery life → Audio-Technica ATH-G1WL offers 15 hours of continuous use compared to the 8 hours of the Avantree.
• Best for TV dialogue clarity → Avantree Medley Air is explicitly tuned to enhance speech and reduce listening strain.
• Best for latency-sensitive gaming → Audio-Technica uses 2.4GHz RF for lag-free operation, whereas the Avantree is optimized for minimal delay in TV passthrough.
• Best for open-air awareness → Avantree Medley Air keeps your ears open, perfect for shared spaces or safety-conscious environments.
• Best for console compatibility → Neither works with PS4/Xbox directly, but Audio-Technica requires a USB PC/Mac setup, while Avantree works with any TV having Optical/AUX.
• Best for microphone functionality → Audio-Technica includes a detachable, highly directional boom mic for communication; Avantree has no microphone.
• Best for passive comfort with glasses → Avantree Medley Air avoids ear cup pressure, making it superior for long-term wear with eyewear.
• Best for immersive surround sound → Audio-Technica features selectable 7.1 surround mode for a 3D audio experience.
For my personal recommendation, I would choose the Audio-Technica ATH-G1WL if I were setting up a dedicated gaming station or a home office where I needed to stream or communicate intensely. The combination of 15-hour battery life, 7.1 surround sound, and a professional-grade microphone makes it the superior tool for productivity and entertainment in a private setting. However, if I am looking for the best sports earbuds for flights or simply a way to watch late-night movies without waking the household, I would reach for the Avantree Medley Air. Its open-ear design solves the problem of isolation that plagues most headphones, making it the ideal choice for travelers who need to stay alert or parents who need to keep an ear on the house while enjoying their favorite shows. Ultimately, the Audio-Technica wins on pure performance specs, but the Avantree wins on lifestyle flexibility and comfort for shared environments.
Both options can technically be used on a plane, but the Audio-Technica ATH-G1WL is better suited for long-haul flights due to its 15-hour battery life and over-ear isolation. The Avantree Medley Air is lighter and more comfortable for short bursts, but its open-ear design lets in too much cabin noise for effective use during takeoff or turbulence.
Only the Audio-Technica ATH-G1WL lists active noise cancellation in its controls. The Avantree Medley Air has no noise control features, relying instead on its open-ear design to keep the listener connected to their surroundings.
The Audio-Technica ATH-G1WL requires a laptop or PC with a USB Type-A port and runs on Windows or macOS (High Sierra/Mojave), but it does not work with game consoles. The Avantree Medley Air works with TVs that have either an Optical (TOSLINK) or AUX (3.5mm) output, but it does not support HDMI ARC passthrough.
Neither is ideal for active walking, but the Avantree Medley Air is safer due to its open-ear design allowing environmental awareness. The Audio-Technica ATH-G1WL is an over-ear headset that blocks outside noise and is bulkier, making it unsuitable for movement.
