If you want high-fidelity, wired immersion for library study or gaming sessions where zero latency matters, choose audio Technica ATH-G1; if you need a wireless travel adapter to stream airplane audio with aptX HD and OLED battery monitoring, choose Avantree Relay & Voyager.
• audio Technica ATH-G1: Delivers studio-grade sound isolation with 45mm drivers and a detachable boom mic, but requires a physical cable connection to your device. Best for stationary users who prioritize audio fidelity over portability.
• Avantree Relay & Voyager: Offers seamless Bluetooth 5.3 streaming from non-Bluetooth sources like airplane seats with premium Qualcomm chipsets, yet functions only as an adapter rather than standalone headphones. Best for travelers needing to bridge legacy audio jacks with modern wireless gear.
• The ATH-G1 is the pick for anyone setting up a dedicated listening or gaming station in a quiet environment.
• The Relay & Voyager is the choice for frequent flyers or commuters who need to unlock wireless capabilities on older hardware.
The audio Technica ATH-G1 is engineered for the person who treats their listening experience as a serious activity, whether that means diving into a complex narrative game or focusing deeply on study materials in a library. This headset features large-diameter 45mm drivers that are specifically tuned to deliver immersive sound quality. The frequency range spans from 10Hz to 35kHz, which suggests a capability to reproduce both deep bass and crisp highs far beyond standard consumer expectations. When you are trying to hear every footstep in a virtual environment or catch the subtle nuances of a lecture recording, this level of driver performance makes a tangible difference.
What stands out most about this design is its commitment to versatility without sacrificing build quality. The unit comes with a flexible boom microphone that can be removed entirely, transforming the headset into a pair of studio-quality, high-fidelity headphones. This dual-purpose nature is rare in the gaming category. You can wear it with the mic for clear communication during a session and then flip the mic off or remove it entirely when you just want to listen to music or focus on reading in silence. The closed-back dynamic earcups provide excellent sound isolation, which is crucial for anyone using lightweight bone conduction alternatives or open-back designs elsewhere; here, the noise cancellation is passive but highly effective due to the enclosure material and earpad seal.
However, this product is not for everyone. Its primary limitation is the reliance on a wired connection. The attached 2.0 mm cable measures 6.6 feet, which gives you some room to move around your desk, but it tethers you to your console, PC, or laptop. If you are looking for sports earbuds for library use that allow you to walk freely while studying, this is not the tool for the job. The weight of 10.24 ounces is also a factor; while described as having strong lightweight construction, it is still a substantial piece of equipment worn over the ears for extended periods. If you plan to carry it in a backpack all day or wear it while commuting on a train, the bulk and the cable might become a nuisance. This headset is best suited for a fixed location where you sit down, plug in, and stay there.

The Avantree Relay & Voyager serves a very specific, often overlooked niche: the traveler who refuses to compromise on audio quality because their seat lacks modern connectivity. Unlike the ATH-G1, this is not a pair of headphones you wear directly. Instead, it is a compact, pocket-sized Bluetooth 5.3 adapter designed to plug into the 3.5mm AUX jack of an airplane seat or any other legacy audio source. Once connected, it streams high-fidelity audio wirelessly to your existing Bluetooth headphones, such as AirPods, Bose, or any other compatible device. This transforms a standard analog airplane entertainment system into a modern digital audio experience without needing a new set of speakers or headphones.
The core strength of this device lies in its chipset and codec support. Powered by a premium Qualcomm chipset, it supports aptX Adaptive and HD Audio, ensuring that the signal loss typically associated with wireless transmission is minimized. This is critical for travelers who have invested in expensive wireless headphones and don't want them to sound muddy when paired with an old plane seat jack. The inclusion of Bluetooth 5.3 guarantees stable connections, reducing the dropouts that plagued earlier generations of adapters. Furthermore, the device features a built-in OLED screen and LED indicators that allow you to monitor battery levels and connection status at a glance, removing the guesswork often found in smaller travel gadgets.
This product is ideal for the frequent flyer who wants to use their favorite wireless headphones on a flight but finds the in-flight entertainment system incompatible with Bluetooth. It is also useful for gym-goers who might have older cardio machines with analog outputs. However, it is important to understand what this device is not. It does not function as a standalone headphone; you must already own a pair of Bluetooth headphones to use it. It is strictly an accessory. If you are looking for a primary audio output device for your daily commute, this will not work unless you are constantly carrying a separate pair of Bluetooth headphones to pair with it.
• Best for Battery Independence → audio Technica ATH-G1: Since this is a wired headset, it draws power directly from your device, meaning you never have to worry about charging a small adapter before a long flight or study session.
• Best for Wireless Freedom on Legacy Hardware → Avantree Relay & Voyager: Only this adapter allows you to convert non-Bluetooth airplane seats or old consoles into wireless audio sources using your current Bluetooth headphones.
• Best for Sound Isolation in Quiet Spaces → audio Technica ATH-G1: The closed-back design and over-ear fit create a natural barrier against external noise, making it superior for library environments where silence is key.
• Best for Portability and Travel → Avantree Relay & Voyager: The compact, pocket-sized design fits easily in a jacket pocket, whereas the ATH-G1 requires a bag or case due to its size and cable management.
• Best for Multi-Device Versatility → audio Technica ATH-G1: It works natively with PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X, and PCs via a single 3.5mm connection, eliminating the need for extra dongles or adapters.
• Best for High-Resolution Codec Support → Avantree Relay & Voyager: With aptX Adaptive and HD Audio, it preserves audio fidelity better than standard Bluetooth codecs when bridging analog-to-digital gaps.
• Best for Microphone Integration → audio Technica ATH-G1: The included detachable boom mic offers highly directional pickup for voice chat, a feature the Relay & Voyager completely lacks.
• Best for Long-Term Durability → audio Technica ATH-G1: The detachable earpads and headband allow for easy replacement, extending the life of the headset compared to the integrated electronics of the adapter.
In my opinion, the decision comes down to whether you are building a station or packing a bag. If your goal is to create a reliable, high-quality listening setup for a library or a home office where you sit down to focus, the audio Technica ATH-G1 is the clear winner. Its wired nature ensures zero latency and infinite power, while the sound quality from the 45mm drivers provides an immersive experience that wireless adapters simply cannot replicate on their own. I would buy the ATH-G1 because it solves the problem of poor audio isolation and limited sound range in one package. Conversely, if you spend hours in airports and hate the idea of being tethered to a wall outlet or a specific console, the Avantree Relay & Voyager is the essential tool you need to make your existing wireless headphones work on flights. For a library setting specifically, however, the stability and isolation of the ATH-G1 make it the superior choice for deep work.
