Audiary is a local audiobook player. This page explains what data the app touches, which outside services it relies on, and the terms that apply when you use it.
This policy describes how Audiary ("the app," "we") handles information when you use it. Audiary has no backend server of its own — there is no Audiary account, no login, and no Audiary-operated database that your personal data is sent to. Almost everything the app does happens locally, on your device. The sections below cover the few places where data does leave your device, and why.
Audiary reads and stores the following locally, in the app's own private storage:
The audio files and folders you choose to add to your library, via Android's standard folder/file picker. Audiary doesn't browse your device on its own — it only indexes what you explicitly point it to.
Listening progress, bookmarks, favorites, and app settings for each book you add.
An optional custom background image for the player screen, selected from your gallery through the system photo picker.
If you use the AI chapter summary feature, your own Gemini API key, encrypted on your device (see Data Security below).
Audiary does not ask for your name, email address, or any account. We do not access your contacts, camera, microphone, or precise location, and we do not read any files outside the folders you explicitly select.
Audiary uses a small number of external services to function:
Google AdMob & User Messaging Platform. Audiary can show ads (for example, a short rewarded video under Settings → Support the App). AdMob may use an advertising identifier and device information to select and measure ads. Where required by regulation (for example, in the EEA and UK), a consent form is shown before any personalized ads load, and you can revisit that choice any time from Settings → Privacy → Ad Consent. Firebase Analytics. Included for basic, aggregate app-usage diagnostics (app opens, device/OS type, crash-adjacent signals). Audiary's own code does not send any custom event or personal data to it — this is Google's standard automatic collection.
Google Gemini API (optional, opt-in). The AI chapter summary feature only runs if you enter your own Gemini API key in Settings. When you request a summary, the relevant audio (trimmed to just that chapter where possible) and its file name are sent directly from your device to Google's Generative Language API, using your key. Audiary has no server in this path — usage and any associated billing are strictly between you and Google. Summaries are cached locally so the same chapter isn't re-sent.
Google Play services. Used for the in-app "rate us" review prompt and for opening the Play Store listing when you rate or share the app — standard Play Store functionality, no additional data collection by Audiary.
Read audio files — read the audio files in the folders you add to your library.
Run in background — keep playback running while you use other apps.
Keep device awake — prevent playback from stopping when the screen turns off.
Notifications — show the playback control notification.
Bluetooth — detect when headphones connect, for auto-play.
Internet / network state — ad requests, AI summaries, and checking connectivity before either.
Home screen widget updates — refresh the home-screen playback widgets.
Battery optimization exemption — optional, only requested if you enable it yourself in Settings, to stop Android from pausing playback in the background.
Settings → Backup & Restore lets you export your bookmarks, progress, and preferences to a single file. You choose exactly where that file is saved using Android's standard "Save As" dialog — Audiary writes it there and nowhere else. Restoring works the same way, from a file you choose. No backup ever passes through an Audiary-operated server, because none exists.
Your Gemini API key is stored using Android's encrypted storage (EncryptedSharedPreferences), backed by the Android Keystore — the same hardware-backed encryption model used for other sensitive on-device secrets. It never leaves your device except as an authentication header on requests you initiate to Google's API.
Audiary is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect data from them. Since the app requires no account, no personal data is knowingly gathered from anyone regardless of age.
Uninstalling the app removes all of its locally stored data from your device.
You can revisit or withdraw ad-personalization consent any time at Settings → Privacy → Ad Consent.
You can remove your Gemini API key any time in Settings, which stops the AI feature immediately.

If this policy changes in a meaningful way, we'll update the "Last updated" date above. Continued use of the app after a change means you accept the revised policy.
By installing or using Audiary, you agree to these Terms. If you don't agree, please don't use the app.
We grant you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable license to install and use Audiary on your own devices, for personal, non-commercial listening. You may not reverse-engineer, redistribute, or resell the app itself.
Audiary is a local player — it does not host, distribute, or provide any audio content of its own. Every file you play is one you already had on your device or storage. You're solely responsible for making sure you have the right to possess and listen to whatever you load into it.
The AI chapter summary feature calls Google's Gemini API using an API key you provide and control. Your use of that key is governed by Google's own terms and pricing, entirely separate from Audiary. We don't guarantee the accuracy, availability, or cost of anything returned by that API.
Audiary may show ads, including optional rewarded ads you can choose to view to support the app's development. Ad availability depends on your region, connectivity, and ad-network fill, and isn't guaranteed at any given moment.
Audiary is provided "as is," without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement. We don't guarantee the app will be uninterrupted, error-free, or compatible with every device.
To the maximum extent permitted by law, we aren't liable for any indirect, incidental, or consequential damages arising from your use of the app, including loss of data (which is why we recommend using the built-in backup feature regularly).
These Terms are governed by the laws of [fill in your country/jurisdiction], without regard to conflict-of-law principles.

We may update these Terms as the app evolves. We'll update the date at the top of this page when we do — continuing to use Audiary after a change means you accept the new Terms.
