If you want a closed-back, over-ear wired headphone with planar magnetic drivers, choose AUDEZE; if you need an open-back reference headphone with a lightweight design, choose Audio-Technica ATH-R70Xa. For laptop listening, the deciding difference is whether you want sound isolation or an open design intended for reference work.
AUDEZE vs Audio-Technica ATH-R70Xa at a Glance
• Audio-Technica ATH-R70Xa: Open-back reference design, 199 g weight, and replaceable velour earpads; trade-off: its open construction is not designed to isolate outside sound. - Choose AUDEZE if you want an over-ear headphone with sound isolation and a planar magnetic driver for focused listening. - Choose the ATH-R70Xa if you want an open-back design for reference listening and value a lightweight build for longer work sessions.
AUDEZE is a wired, over-ear headphone built around planar magnetic drivers. Its listed frequency range is 10 Hz to 50 kHz, and the enclosure material is aluminum. Those details make it the more distinctive choice for someone who wants a substantial, full-size listening setup rather than a compact portable pair. The carrying case is listed as carbon fiber, while the headphones themselves are black.
The listed sound control is sound isolation. That gives AUDEZE an advantage over the open-back Audio-Technica for a desk or room where you would rather reduce distractions than leave the listening space acoustically open. The product information also lists media controls and a remote, which may be useful when listening from a connected device. Its connectivity is wired; the headphone-jack field is uncertain, so I would verify the connection you need before buying.
There is a notable practical trade-off: the supplied item information lists the weight as 6.65 pounds. That is much heavier than the ATH-R70Xa’s 199 g figure, and it makes AUDEZE a less compelling pick if your priority is wearing headphones through long work blocks or moving around with them. Its listed dimensions are 14 x 14 x 8 inches, so this is not presented as a small, lightweight laptop accessory.
How We Research
We compare products from their published specs and features; the verdicts below are our independent editorial opinions.

The Audio-Technica ATH-R70Xa is an open-back, wired reference headphone with dynamic drivers. Its listed driver size is 45 mm, and its impedance is 470 ohm. The central design choice is its fully open back: the product information describes airflow through the earcups as a way to avoid internal resonance and support quick transient response. In everyday terms, this is a headphone aimed at listening and working in a dedicated space, not at blocking the sounds around you.
At 199 g, it is the lighter option by a wide margin compared with AUDEZE’s listed 6.65-pound weight. The headband is described as reimagined, the construction as metal-reinforced, and the velour earpads as replaceable. Those details point toward a design intended to suit extended work sessions and allow the earpads to be changed when needed. The detachable locking cable is dual-sided, measures about 3 m, and is supplied with a 6.3 mm stereo adapter and a carrying pouch.
For a laptop setup, this is the more appealing choice if you want open-back reference headphones and can work in a quiet room. The long cable may suit a fixed desk but is less convenient if you want to walk around while listening. There is no built-in wireless connection in the supplied specifications; connectivity is wired.
Who should skip it: Skip the ATH-R70Xa if you need sound isolation or want to keep headphone sound from being open to the surrounding room.
• Best fit for sound isolation → AUDEZE. Its listed noise-control feature is sound isolation; the ATH-R70Xa lists no noise control. - Best fit for open-back reference listening → Audio-Technica ATH-R70Xa. Its fully open-back construction is the defining design difference. - Best fit if weight matters most → Audio-Technica ATH-R70Xa. It is listed at 199 g, while AUDEZE is listed at 6.65 pounds. - Best fit if you want planar magnetic drivers → AUDEZE. Its listed driver type is planar magnetic; the Audio-Technica uses a dynamic driver. - Best fit for a long fixed desk cable → Audio-Technica ATH-R70Xa. Its dual-sided detachable locking cable is about 3 m long. - Best fit if you want an included carrying case → AUDEZE. A carrying case is specified, with carbon fiber listed as its material. - Best fit if replaceable earpads matter → Audio-Technica ATH-R70Xa. Its velour earpads are described as replaceable. - Best fit for someone seeking Bluetooth earbuds for laptop use → neither. Both products are wired over-ear headphones, not Bluetooth earbuds.
For laptop use, first decide where you will listen. AUDEZE’s sound isolation makes it the more suitable of these two if you need to shut out some surrounding noise. The ATH-R70Xa’s open-back design points in the opposite direction: it is for a listening environment where sound isolation is not the goal. The sheets do not specify a numerical isolation level for AUDEZE, so I would not treat that feature as a promise of complete silence.
Next, consider comfort over the length of a session. The ATH-R70Xa has the clearer advantage on listed weight at 199 g, plus a redesigned headband and replaceable velour earpads. AUDEZE’s item information lists a much heavier 6.65-pound weight. That figure is important enough to check carefully against your own expectations before choosing it for extended wear.
The connection and cable details also matter. Both headphones are wired, so neither answers a search for Bluetooth earbuds for laptop. The Audio-Technica includes a detachable, locking cable of about 3 m, as well as a 6.3 mm adapter. AUDEZE lists a remote and media controls, but the headphone-jack detail is marked uncertain in the supplied information. If your laptop connection needs a particular plug or adapter, confirm that detail before making a decision.
Neither product is a fit for someone searching for the best USB-C charging in-ear earbuds for laptop use. These are over-ear wired headphones, and neither sheet lists USB-C charging, an in-ear design, or a battery. Likewise, neither is described as waterproof or as a true wireless earbud, so they are not candidates for someone searching for the best waterproof true wireless earbuds for laptop.
Finally, do not read the frequency figures as a complete prediction of how either model will sound to you. AUDEZE lists a 10 Hz to 50 kHz range, while the Audio-Technica sheet gives 5 hertz as its frequency-response figure. The specifications identify different designs and stated figures, but they do not provide a direct listening comparison or enough detail to settle personal sound preferences. For this decision, the more concrete distinctions are planar magnetic versus dynamic drivers, isolation versus open back, and the substantial weight difference.
I would choose the Audio-Technica ATH-R70Xa for laptop listening if I had a quiet workspace and wanted a lightweight open-back reference headphone. Its 199 g weight, replaceable velour earpads, and long detachable cable make the design a clearer fit for extended desk sessions.
I’d choose AUDEZE instead if sound isolation and planar magnetic drivers matter more than weight. My laptop recommendation is the ATH-R70Xa for open-room reference work, but AUDEZE is the more appropriate pick when isolation is the priority.
Both are wired over-ear headphones, so either may suit a laptop setup if the connection is compatible. AUDEZE lists sound isolation, while the ATH-R70Xa is open-back and weighs 199 g. Choose based on your listening environment and whether isolation or low weight matters more.
AUDEZE is the better fit based on the supplied specifications: its noise-control feature is listed as sound isolation. The ATH-R70Xa lists no noise control and uses an open-back design. Neither specification provides a numerical measure of how much sound is isolated.
No. Both are wired, over-ear headphones, and neither product sheet lists Bluetooth, USB-C charging, or an in-ear design. They are not alternatives to Bluetooth earbuds for laptop use.
The ATH-R70Xa is listed at 199 g, substantially less than AUDEZE’s listed 6.65 pounds. Audio-Technica also describes replaceable velour earpads and a reworked headband. The supplied details therefore make it the clearer choice if minimizing weight is important.
