If you want deep, visceral bass and a warm, vintage tonality for stationary listening in a quiet room, choose Audeze LCD-2; if you need an ultra-efficient planar driver that handles complex orchestral passages with ease and offers interchangeable cable flexibility, choose SHANLING HW600. This is not a contest of "which sounds better" in the abstract, but a question of which engineering philosophy aligns with your specific audio habits and physical environment. Both units utilize planar magnetic technology to deliver high-resolution audio, yet they approach the task from opposite ends of the spectrum regarding impedance, sensitivity, and driver architecture.
• Audeze LCD-2: Delivers a warmer, more musical sound signature with incredible bass response thanks to its 100mm drivers, but requires significant power to drive due to its 70-ohm impedance. Best for home audiophiles who prioritize tonal warmth and don't mind using a dedicated amplifier.
• SHANLING HW600: Features massive 110x86mm diaphragms with high sensitivity (104dB) and low impedance (30 ohms), making it incredibly easy to drive even from portable sources while maintaining accuracy. Best for listeners who want studio-grade clarity without needing heavy desktop gear.
• The Verdict: If you are building a permanent listening station, the LCD-2 offers a unique character; if you value versatility and efficiency across different setups, the HW600 is the pragmatic choice.
The Audeze LCD-2 Classic is a tribute to a legendary model, reimagined with a suspension headband and new earpads that prioritize long-term comfort during extended sessions. This headphone is designed for the listener who values atmosphere and emotional connection over clinical precision. The sound profile is distinctively warm, offering a rich, full-bodied experience that feels less like a technical demonstration and more like being in the room with the musicians. The 100mm Planar Magnetic drivers are the heart of this performance, delivering a bass response that is both deep and textured. Because these drivers have superior impulse response, the music feels more realistic, with instruments appearing to float in space rather than sitting flat against the left or right channel.
However, this sonic character comes with specific requirements. With an impedance of 70 ohms, the LCD-2 is not a headphone you should try to power directly from a smartphone or a laptop's headphone jack. It demands a dedicated amplifier to perform as intended. Without sufficient power, the bass will feel tight and the overall volume may remain underwhelming. Furthermore, the open-back design means there is no active noise cancellation or isolation beyond the passive seal provided by the leather-free memory foam pads. If you plan to use these on a busy commute or in a noisy office, the ambient noise will bleed in, and your music will leak out to those around you.

This product is ideal for the person who has a dedicated listening chair or desk setup where they can control the environment. It fits the user who treats listening as a ritual, perhaps sipping coffee or tea while engaging with a favorite album. The hand-crafted nature of the build, engineered in Southern California, suggests a level of attention to detail that prioritizes longevity and acoustic purity over mass-market convenience. If you are looking for headphones that offer a specific, nostalgic warmth and you have the equipment to back it up, the LCD-2 is a compelling option.
The SHANLING HW600 takes a different approach to the same fundamental technology, focusing on efficiency and adaptability. At its core is a massive 110x86mm flat diaphragm, which is larger than the circular drivers found in many competitors. This large surface area allows for greater air displacement and reduced distortion, contributing to a soundstage that feels expansive and detailed. The key advantage here lies in the electrical specifications: a low 30-ohm impedance paired with a high sensitivity of 104dB. This combination means the HW600 is incredibly easy to drive. You can plug these into a wide variety of sources, from high-end portable digital players to entry-level amplifiers, and still get loud, dynamic sound without strain.
Comfort is another major pillar of the HW600's design. SHANLING utilized ergonomic ear cups made of high-quality lambskin leather, featuring multi-dimensional rotation to fit various head shapes. The asymmetrical design ensures that the ear cups conform to the contours of the face, reducing pressure points during long listening marathons. The cable system is also a standout feature, offering a dual 3.5mm connector design that supports balanced 4.4mm inputs. This modularity allows users to upgrade their cables later or switch between single-ended and balanced connections depending on their source device. The inclusion of 14 high-performance magnets distributed linearly ensures a uniform driving force across the diaphragm, which translates to fast transient response and accurate imaging.
This headphone is perfect for the mobile audiophile or the versatile listener who wants one pair of cans to do everything. Whether you are working at a desk, traveling with a portable DAC, or setting up a temporary listening station, the HW600 adapts seamlessly. It is particularly well-suited for those who appreciate a neutral, reference-quality sound that reveals every detail of a recording without adding a coloration layer. If you are tired of constantly hunting for powerful amps just to get decent volume, or if you need a headphone that can handle everything from classical symphonies to complex electronic mixes with equal aplomb, the HW600 offers a robust solution.
• Best for Bass Depth and Warmth → Audeze LCD-2. Its specific tuning emphasizes a lush, analog-like low end that creates a cozy, immersive atmosphere.
• Best for Efficiency and Portability → SHANLING HW600. The low impedance and high sensitivity mean it works great with smaller, battery-powered devices without sounding thin.
• Best for Driver Size and Detail → SHANLING HW600. The 110x86mm rectangular diaphragm offers a unique physical advantage in handling complex frequencies with minimal distortion.
• Best for Balanced Connectivity → SHANLING HW600. The native support for 4.4mm balanced cables gives you more flexibility for future upgrades compared to the standard 6.35mm jack on the Audeze.
• Best for Long-Term Comfort → SHANLING HW600. The lambskin leather and rotating ear cups provide a custom fit that many find superior for marathon sessions.
• Best for Vintage Tone → Audeze LCD-2. If you miss the sound of older recordings or prefer a slightly rolled-off treble that isn't fatiguing, this is the choice.
• Best for Open-Back Immersion → Audeze LCD-2. While both are open-back, the specific acoustic engineering of the LCD-2 creates a wider, more diffuse soundstage for stationary listening.
• Best for Versatility Across Sources → SHANLING HW600. It bridges the gap between high-fidelity home systems and portable setups far better than the higher-impedance LCD-2.
In my opinion, the SHANLING HW600 is the smarter buy for most people in 2026. While the Audeze LCD-2 offers a charming, warm sound that I love for relaxing at home, its high impedance and lack of modern connectivity options limit its utility. The HW600, with its massive drivers, high sensitivity, and flexible cabling, delivers professional-grade performance that doesn't require a wall outlet to shine. I would choose the SHANLING because it respects the reality of how we listen today—across multiple devices and environments. For running specifically, neither is a true athletic companion due to the over-ear design, but if you are looking for the best Bluetooth headphones for running via a separate adapter or simply the best head phones for running in a controlled gym setting, the efficiency of the HW600 makes it the more practical investment. Ultimately, if you want volume limiting sports earbuds for running, you should look elsewhere, but for serious listening, the HW600 wins on pure capability and adaptability.
No, both models are over-ear headphones designed for stationary listening. They are too bulky and lack the secure fit required for vigorous exercise, so they are not recommended as the best bluetooth headphones for running.
You definitely need an amplifier for the Audeze LCD-2 due to its 70-ohm impedance. The SHANLING HW600, however, has a low 30-ohm impedance and high sensitivity, so it can be driven effectively by most portable players without a dedicated amp.
The Audeze LCD-2 provides a warmer, more musical sound with emphasized bass, while the SHANLING HW600 offers a flatter, more analytical response with greater detail retrieval thanks to its larger diaphragm and lower distortion.
Yes, the SHANLING HW600 features a dual 3.5mm interchangeable cable design with balanced 4.4mm support. The Audeze LCD-2 uses a standard 6.35mm jack and typically relies on a fixed cable configuration unless modified.
