Anthony Fowler arrived as a fresh-faced student at Auckland University in 1977. Two years later he started his research on Auckland’s climate with a third-year project on the urban heat island. A post-graduate thesis on reconstructing climate from kauri tree rings followed, before he landed his first proper job at the Auckland Regional Water Board. But the research bug had bitten, so it wasn’t long before he was back at the university pursuing a PhD on potential climate change impacts on Auckland water resources. After a couple of years doing similar work across the ditch, he returned again in 1992 to take up an academic position. Three decades of research followed, included much work on Auckland’s past, present, and future climate. Anthony took early retirement in 2021 to pursue other interests, including writing Auckland's Changing Climate.
