1. Sundiata Keita (Sun-jah-tah Kay-ee-tah)- The first ruler of the empire of Mali (circa de 1235- 1255). His proper name was Sogolon Djata Keita. He used his military and leadership to take control of the Niger River trade route.
Semangaru (Say-mon-gah-roo)- An enchanted Soninke (So-neen-kay) chief who took control of the southern Niger River region and eventually the then chiefdom of Mali. He was defeated by Sundiata Keita in battle (circa de 1235). Legend states Sundiata defeated the powerful wizard by shooting an arrow made of magic rooster claws at Semangaru that took away his magic.
Oral tradition- A method of passing on cultural or historical information by word of mouth without the benefit of written records.
Sogolon Djata Keita (a.k.a. Sundiata Keita) was named in the common Mandinka practice of naming male children. Sogolon (So-go-lone) was his mother’s name, Djata (Jah-tah) was his given name and Keita was his father’s clan name. This practice was more than likely adopted because of Mali’s noblemen having multiple wives—giving the son the name of his mother identified a boy’s branch on his father’s family tree.
Based on this information, boys can figure out what their names might be using these steps:
Use their mother’s name as their first name
Use their actual first name as a middle name
Use school’s name as their clan (last) name.
