Presented by Allison Maxon
Children and youth who have suffered complex trauma and attachment disruptions have layers of emotional and psychological distress that continue to surface through each developmental stage. Neuro-biological effects of trauma and neglect often drive behaviors and leave parents and caregivers feeling overwhelmed and ill-equipped to manage the intense needs and challenges their children and family experience. It is imperative that all professionals have increased insight and awareness into the complexities of assessing and supporting the caregivers who are potentially parenting our most vulnerable children/youth. This training will assist professionals in having increased insight and understanding of the core components associated with attachment, complex trauma and permanency/adoption/kinship parenting.
TOPICS INCLUDE:
1. Review attachment theory and attachment patterns, as a basis for assessing the child and family’s needs, strengths and challenges.
2. Understand the key clinical constructs of relational trauma, complex trauma, and the impact of vicarious trauma on the newly formed family system.
3. Identify the five critical developmental areas of need that are impacted significantly by attachment disruptions, neglect and trauma. Underneath a child’s behaviors are the unmet developmental needs that have not been mastered.
4. Introduce and practice utilizing a developmental lens so that responses/interventions/treatment are based on need (not pathology).
5. Describe how the Core Issues in Adoption/Permanence can actively place distress on the family system and ways to explore these issues both pre- and post-placement.
