Let's cut down to the chase.
Reports on over 1,000 protesting scientists getting arrested has been trending on Twitter this week (since April 12, 2022, when the video about this was tweeted by @ClimateAd on Twitter)
According to them, we are running out of time.
(as stated in this major report (embedded below) from the United Nations’ Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.)
Compiled below are ways on how to help save the Planet Earth from this fate.
Stay away from using fossil fuels.
Can't stay away from using gas-powered vehicles? Don't worry! You can opt to walk, jog, or bike your way to the workplace. Also, stay away from using private vehicles. You can save much more when opting for public transportation.
Stay away from NFTs.
Not only are NFTs ethically questionable, most of them run on Ethereum, which is known for being computationally expensive (and if something is computationally expensive, it means it uses a whole lot of electricity).
Be selective in the products you choose.
Most products that claim to be eco-friendly might actually be harmful to the ecosystem. Learn more about greenwashing here. Stay away from said products (including some Apple products).
On a similar note, support the #RightToRepair movement to help give you, the consumer, in gaining rights to repair your own devices without restrictions, while reducing greenhouse gas emissions usually associated in the manufacturing process of your devices. Learn more here.
Use products that are actually made from eco-friendly and sustainable materials (this means excluding regular paper from that list because paper is made from wood, and chopping up wood for paper isn't exactly eco-friendly).
Use products that can last longer and can use less electricity while doing so.
Stay away from plastic packaging.
More specifically, single-use plastics. Opt for bio-based, compostable packaging.
Buy locally-sourced products.
Shipping imported products is just extra greenhouse gas emissions. If inevitable, keep it at a minimum.
On a more similar note, buy fresh produce near your area. Delivering imported produce from different regions in your country is extra greenhouse gas emissions. If inevitable, keep it at a minimum.
Plant more plants.
Not just trees. Plants. They can help absorb carbon. However, as global warming gets stronger every day, this ability can be decreased. Read here, or here. So we need to plant more to counteract this.
Turn off appliances and devices when not in use.
Common sense. Less appliances in use = less electricity used.
Use and encourage the use of renewable energy sources.
This sounds redundant, but using renewable energy sources decreases our need to use energy produced by burning fossil fuels.
These energy sources include: geothermal, wind, water (hydropower, ocean), and solar.
HOWEVER! As we start to depend more on the use of batteries, lithium (the main ingredient in lithium-ion batteries) are mined more, and mining lithium isn't exactly eco-friendly. Read here.
Use less water in certain activities.
Take shorter showers. Turn off the tap when brushing your teeth. When possible, use less water when flushing the toilet (and keep the seat cover down when doing so :D )
Reduce. Reuse. Recycle.
Reduce the amount of waste you produce. Reuse some of your items, or find new ways to use them. And recycle. Recycle your items, not only to reduce your waste, but also so that you don't have to spend your time and money on new things.
Use online services that are carbon neutral or carbon negative.
Like Google. (That's why some of our services and this website operates on Google.)
Use Ecosia instead of Google as a search engine.
#NOTSPONSORED Ecosia is built on Microsoft Bing, except, they plant a tree for approximately every 80 searches. They have full transparency reports on their goals. Go check them out!
