King Heng LAU is an undergraduate student at CUHK, majoring in Earth System Science (Atmospheric Science Stream). Born and raised in Hong Kong, King Heng developed an interest in meteorology since he was small. He is generally interested in tropical meteorology, in particular tropical cyclones which sometimes bring gales and downpours to the city. King Heng is currently in his final year of his undergraduate studies and is expecting to graduate in 2022. He would like to pursue a research career in Atmospheric Science with the hope to help mitigate the impacts of extreme weather under climate change.
Research Interests:
El Nino Southern Oscillation (ENSO)
Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD)
Tropical Meteorology
Asian monsoon
Recent Projects working on:
Simulation of ENSO and IOD by CMIP6 models
Cyril Chin is a final year student in the Earth System Science Programme and is fascinated by the phenomena found in tropical meteorology, such as the Asian monsoon and ENSO. Under the supervision of Prof. Francis Tam, he is currently working on investigating the simulation of ENSO and the Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) by CMIP6 models.
Research Interests:
Numerical weather prediction model
Storm surges
Recent Projects working on:
An atmosphere-wave-ocean (WRF-ROMS-SWAN) coupled model study based on typhoon Goni
Being interested in the relationships between air, sea, ice and land on the Earth, Felix Chiang joined the Earth System Science Programme and is a final-year student now. After attending various major courses, he found that the air-sea interactions and tropical cyclones the most fascinating and interesting, so he is now under the supervision of Prof. Francis Tam to conduct a research regarding WRF-ROMS-SWAN coupled model which helps simulate the atmospheric, ocean and wave conditions simultaneously during the approach of tropical cyclones.
Research Interests:
Extreme weather
Tropical cyclones
Recent Projects working on:
Effect of Central-Pacific type ENSO on northwest Pacific Ocean tropical cyclones activity and their impacts on Asian inland regions
I have developed strong interest towards weather in our everyday life since I was in junior secondary school. Realizing ESSC is the major programme that fits my interest the most, I entered this big family once I graduated from secondary school without hesitation. I am quite a curious person, and I like to dig deep into the reason whenever I see phenomena which I find it intriguing.
