Periodontal Treatment

Reasons for Periodontal Treatment

Periodontal disease refers to a set of inflammatory conditions. In its early stage, called Gingivitis, the gums become swollen and red. One of the biggest threats to dental health, periodontal disease, is mainly seen in adults. Periodontal disease is caused due to infection triggered by bacteria present in plaque. In due course, the infection causes the jawbones to recede, and teeth become loose.

Here are several reasons why periodontal treatment is necessary :

  • Advanced Gum disease - Moderate/Advanced gum disease or periodontitis prevails due to bleeding gums. The area around most teeth gets swollen and red. The jawbones start receding.

  • Gum recession - The gum infection that proliferates advanced gum disease often appears in one area. Gum recession can be caused due to brushing with a stiff bristle brush, or it can also be caused due to wrong positioning of teeth. To prevent further spreading, seek immediate consultation from the dentist.

  • Crown lengthening - Periodontist performs the surgical procedure of crown lengthening to remove soft tissue and sometimes bone to increase the amount of teeth exposure.

  • Ridge augmentation - Ridge augmentation, also known as recontouring, is a dental procedure used during tooth extraction to help refurbish the natural contour of the gums and the jaw that has been lost due to gum recession. Before undertaking, a periodontist must treat any existing bacterial infections and periodontitis.

While there is a mild periodontal problem, the periodontist focuses on curing the underlying bacterial infections. However, in some cases, deep scaling is required to remove the bacterial plaque and calculus (tartar) from the teeth and tissues.

As periodontal disease is a progressive disease, it is advisable to remove the bacteria and calculus build-up before spreading the infection.
