Atlantis, The Palm is a luxury hotel resort located at the apex of the Palm Jumeirah in the United Arab Emirates. It was the first resort to be built on the island and is themed on the myth of Atlantis[6] but includes distinct Arabian elements. The resort opened on September 24, 2008 as a joint venture between Kerzner International Holdings Limited and Istithmar World.[7]

The Poseidon and Neptune Underwater Suites at Atlantis The Palm are two of only a tiny handful of underwater hotel rooms around the world, and regularly appear in lists of the world's most unique accommodation.

Atlantis The Palm, opened on 24 September 2008 as a joint venture between Kerzner International Holdings Limited and Istithmar World. In April 2012, Istithmar World acquired Kerzner's 50-percent stake in the property for US$250 million. The property continues to be managed by Kerzner International Resorts. The Conceptual Design Architects were Northpoint-South Africa. The architect of record was design firm Wimberly, Allison, Tong and Goo (WATG) an international firm specializing in Luxury Hotels. The principal contract for the project was awarded to Laing O'Rourke,[9] a multinational construction firm based in United Kingdom. Laing O'Rourke was responsible for the design and construction phases of the 23-story hotel and water park.

Days before the opening ceremony, the hotel's grand lobby caught fire[11] and became engulfed in flames which caused concern over the hotel's opening. Around the clock work repaired the damage caused and the hotel opened on time.[12][13]

As part of the opening, a light show of moving images was illuminated onto the hotel. 100,000 fireworks, around seven times the amount that were used for the opening ceremony of the 2008 Beijing Olympics, were let off, lasting 15 minutes. The display of fireworks across the full 5 km (3.1 mi) stretch of The Palm lit up the entire island and Atlantis, The Palm. Custom-made shells shipped in from across the globe created a light spectacle taking off from the 716 firing locations around the island, including 400 balconies at the resort. Display creator Fireworks by Grucci claims the display set a new world record, but records curator Guinness World Records has yet to announce the status.[14] The launch party costed an estimated 15m in total, with Kylie Minogue earning 2m for a 60-minute performance for the hotel's 2,000 guests.[15][16]

In October 2007, the hotel received a shipment of 28 bottlenose dolphins from the Solomon Islands, to be used as part of their aquarium exhibit, called Dolphin Bay. The move was decried by several environmental groups, particularly for the fact that the export of dolphins had earlier been banned by the Solomon Islands government (after a similar controversial shipment to Mexico). Hotel managers have said that though the dolphins are being trained to interact with visitors, they will not appear in any sort of show or circus-like performance. They have also stated that the health of the dolphins is paramount; because the bottlenose is not an endangered species, their shipment did not pose a problem. The deal was done with the approval of the United Arab Emirates and Solomon Island governments, through the company Solomon Islands Marine Mammal Education Centre and Exporters Limited (who had overturned the earlier ban in court). The amount of money paid for the dolphins has not been disclosed.[17][18]

The suite features a private guarded entrance and elevator, according to the hotel's website, and comes fully staffed with its own dedicated chefs and butlers. Once inside, you'll find soaring ceilings, three equally extravagant master bedrooms to choose from (which can sleep up to six adults and three children), and multiple spaces to relax. The suite offers a spacious, well-appointed lounge, a private library, a media and game room, a dining room that can seat up to 16, and a massage room. Even the soap found in all of the four baths is luxurious, made from 14K gold. But perhaps the most impressive feature is its sweeping views of Dubai and the Palm Jumeirah, the largest man-made island (in the shape of a palm tree, naturally) in the entire world.

We're always looking for new ways to inspire your next holiday - fascinating destinations, unique hotels and all the little things that come together to create unforgettable moments for you and your family.

Walking into the lobby, the massive ceiling gave way with its huge, ornate glass sculpture and decorative carved pillars, perfect for photos. We were then directed to check in at a separate area, not far from the lobby. Since we were staying in an Imperial Club room, the Imperial Club had its own lounge for check-in and access for hotel guests.

Upon entering our room on the East Tower on the 13th floor, we were greeted with a clean, fresh room. Our room consisted of two queen size beds, a bathroom with a soaking tub and sliding door in front of the tub that overlooks the room, a stocked mini fridge, and a view of the Palm Island and the skyline of Dubai. The hotel atmosphere was very nice and smelled of being newly designed and renovated as the resort had recently undergone a massive 3-year refurbishment. We were quite impressed with our room and views. After receiving our luggage and getting quickly settled, we made our way to the waterpark.

The walk to the waterpark was not far from our hotel room on the East Tower. The walk is actually pleasant as you bypass the huge aquarium, several boutique and fine retail stores, The Lost Chambers Aquarium, and restaurants. If your goal is to enjoy the waterpark, I do recommend staying on the East Tower for ease of entry.

We showed our hotel key to the attendant at the entrance, who was able to verify each of our identities from our passport photos at check-in. We each received a watch for the park, which we return each time we leave the park. Afterwards, we picked up our free towels and waterpark slippers (which I highly recommend having).

When we booked our hotel, we booked with food in mind. Since booking a half board was not much more expensive than booking without meal options, we wanted to make the best of our stay and did not want to worry about food in general, so we opted for the half board. The half board included breakfast and dinner. As Imperial Club members, we had the option to take breakfast at the Imperial Lounge or the Kaleidoscope restaurant. We chose the Kaleidoscope for its breakfast buffet option with several food choices to choose from fresh fruits, pastries, local and international flares, eggs benedict station, and more. The breakfast was worth the extra add.

The resort sits on Palm Jumeirah, a tree-shaped island recognized for its opulent hotels, apartments, and restaurants. The top-end suite will set you back $100,000 a night. The suite is where Beyonc was reported to stay during the resort's reveal in January, according to CNBC.

I arrived from my previous hotel in an Uber rather than the complimentary transfers which are available only from the airport. I was greeted at the end of a long red carpet and initially walked over to a small reception area where they checked which tower my Imperial Club room was in. The main reception was definitely an impressive space, although it was a little OTT for me. The resort is very clearly aimed mainly at families with the water park and as a single woman traveller, I am probably not their target audience at all.

The room had everything you would expect from a luxury hotel room such as bathrobes, slippers, bottled water and fruit. There was no coffee maker, but there was a kettle. It also had a massive walk-in wardrobe, which may have been down to the location of it rather than a standard feature.
