Atlanta Saxophone Day was founded in 2006 by Dr. Jan Berry Baker and Dr. Scott Stewart at Emory University. The first year enrolled just twenty saxophonists and the event quickly grew to pre-pandemic numbers hovering around 150. It alternated sites between Emory University and Georgia State University for several years and is currently held at Lakeside HIgh School in Altanta. It is one of the largest gatherings of saxophonists in the United States.
Guest artists of international rewnown have included Claude Delangle, Frederick Hemke, Otis Murphy, Kenneth Tse, Taimur Sullivan, Stephen Page, Robert Young, John Sampen, Chien-Kwan Lin, Carrie Koffman, Debra Richtmeyer, and Masahito Sugihara.
The mission of Atlanta Saxophone Day is to provide a positive, musical, educational, and social experience for saxophonists of all ages through the engagement of music performance, teaching and learning, product exhibition, and fellowship. The day is bookended by mass saxophone choir, with master classes, focus sessions, artist recitals, and exhibits throughout the day.
Atlanta Saxophone Day operates under the auspices of the Atlanta Saxophone Quartet, LLC.
