Andrey Tkachenko

I am an Assistant Professor in Economics at the Graduate School of Business, Nazarbayev University, and I received my Ph.D. from Bocconi University. My main research interests are Political Economy, where I study public opinion in wartime, and Industrial Organization, focusing on Auctions, Public Procurement, and Mergers. 

In current projects, I study the reliability of public opinion polls in wartime, the effect of economic distress on attitudes toward the war in Ukraine, and the role of Russian media in Kazakhstan in shaping attitudes about the war.

My Job Market paper studies the effect of vertical mergers between drug producers and distributors on prices in the Public Procurement of Pharmaceuticals. I have other ongoing projects investigating firms' behavior in vertical markets: the first focuses on the effect of preferences for domestic producers in the Pharma industry, and the second studies the impact of mergers in the Entertainment industry. My publications examine factors affecting informal practices in Public Procurement under weak institutions, such as politicians' tenure, the gender gap, ownership structure of suppliers, and the COVID-19 pandemic. 

In my research, I use microeconomic theory, causal inference methods, structural estimation, and online experiments. I have taught an applied econometrics course focused on causal inference, as well as Industrial organization and International Trade.
