This wonderful pottery owl, or Tecolote bank is from Ameyaltepec and the indigenous Nahua that create them in Guerrero, Mexico. This style of red & tan painted clay, or barro pintado, as well as the trip-pod base, dates from pre-Hispanic times and this area. Natural pigments were painted on a tan clay slip base, and then medium brown and rust-red brushwork was added emulating feathers, wings, etc. The figure was then burnished to a low luster after firing and feels very smooth to the touch, giving these pieces their characteristic look & charm. This vintage clay owl pottery bank is in very good condition with only a little minor surface burn from the firing to the painting in a few spots. Measuring 18 inches tall and 33 inches around the widest part. This would make a fantastic addition to your Mexican Folk Art collection, or as a distinctive 'stand alone' display piece.
