The Problem
The Main Problem that I am trying to solve is that Student Athletes are suffering from mental health and are not getting the help that they need.
Many athletes feel ashamed or even embarrassed to admit that they are struggling with mental health. Some of the main signs that you can look for in athletes who are struggling are low energy, irritability and not getting enough sleep.
Collegiate athletes are 2% more likely to experience mental illness than normal students.
33% of students experience depression and anxiety in college, but only 10% of student-athletes in that group seek mental health support.
Mental health professionals need to have more of an understanding of the stress and anxiety that goes through an athletic environment.
Issues that impact Athlete's mental health:
Academic stress: Balancing rigorous academic demands with intense athletic schedules can lead to stress, anxiety, and burnout.
Physical injuries: Injuries can be a significant source of stress and anxiety for student-athletes, as they may fear losing their spot on the team or being unable to participate in their sport.
Performance anxiety: The pressure to perform at a high level can cause anxiety and self-doubt, which can impact an athlete's confidence and overall mental well-being.
Social isolation: The intense focus on training and competition can lead to social isolation, which can contribute to feelings of loneliness and depression.
Lack of support: Some student- athletes may not have access to adequate support systems, such as mental health resources or understanding coaches and teammates, which can make it difficult to cope with mental health challenges.
