The ATA (Archema Transport Agency) and the AS (Archema Subway) have announced the launch of a tender for the renovation of the suburban train Line A, wich will be converted into the new Metro Line 5. This collaboration marks a significant step towards expanding and improving the city's transport system.

"This decision reflects our shared commitment to providing a more efficient and integrated public transport service for the citizens of Archema", said Kamala White, General Manager of ATA.
The renovation of the Line A to convert it into Metro Line 5 involves a series of interventions aimed at modernizing the existing infrastructure and improving passenger experience. The project will include station upgrades, installation of new signaling and safety systems, and the acquisition of more trains. "We want the new Line 5 to be cutting-edge in every aspect, from safety to passenger comfort", added White.
The tender, open to companies specialized in engineering and railway construction, sets rigours criteria for participant selection. Interested companies will need to demonstrate high technical capabilities and proven experience in large-scale projects. The deadline for proposal submission is set for next month, with work scheduled to begin in early 2025.
Archema's mayor, Francesco Gargano, expressed great satisfaction with the initiative, highlighting its benefits for the city: "The transormation of Line A into the new Metro Line 5 is an ambitious project that will help decongest urban traffic and improve the quality of life for our citizens. Additionally, it will promote economic development in the area served by the line".
The new Metro Line 5 will pass through some of Archema's most densely populated neighbourhoods, significantly improving connections between the city center and the subsurbs. This project is part of a broader plan for metro network expansion, aiming to make public transport an increasingly attractive and sustainable choice for residents.
The division of responsability between ATA and AS is desgned to leverage the strenghts of both companies, ensuring efficient and well-maintained service.
"This shared management model is a first for our city, and we are confident it will bring significant benefits", said Luke Ryan, CEO of AS. "Our experience in railway line maintenance, combined with ATA's operational expertise, will create a synergy that improves the quality of service offered to passengers".
The ATA and AS have already started a series of public meetings to inform citizens about the projects details and gather feedback and suggestions. This transparency and openess to dialogue are integral parts of their approach, aimed to actively involving the community in the transformation process.
With the tender for the renovation of Line A, Archema is preparing for a new era in public transport, marking an important step towards a more connected, efficient, and sustainable future. The new Metro Line 5 promises to became an essential component of residents daily liver, enhancing accessibility and transport quality in the city.
Archema, July 15, 2024 - With the announcement of renovation of Line A to convert it into the new Metro Line 5, ATA and AS have devised a detailed plan to ensure continuity of transport service during the works, minimizing disruptions for commuters and residents.
SUBSTITUTIVE BUS SERVICE
To temporarily replace Line A, AS has established a substitutive bus service that will follow a route parallel to the railway line. These buses will operate frequently during peak hours to ensure minimal waiting times. Substitutive bus stops have been strategically positioned nearly Line A stations to facilitate acces for regular passengers.
ENHANCING EXISTING LINES
In addition to the susbtitutive buses, ATA plans o enhance existing metro lines (and suburban train services for AS) to absorve the increased passenger load. Train frequencies on Lines 1, 2, 3, 4, B/B1 and C will be increased, with additional trains during peak hours. (The trains will be taken from actual Line A and will be revisioned for a safe service on metro and lines A, B/B1, C). Furthermore, urban bus lines connecting areas served by Line A will be boosted with extra vehicles.
PASSENGER COMMUNICATION AND ASSISTANCE
Effective communication with passengers has been identified as a priority for managing the transition period. ATA and AS have launched an informational campign through various channels, including social media, official websites, and announcements in stations and on public transport. Temporany assistance centers have been created at major Line A stations (Archema Terminal, 2021, West Silverstone Square, Saint Paul Cathedral and Stadium) and metro stations with connections to other lines (Emerald Heights, Crystal, Glenville Station, Archema Terminal, Opera House, 2nd Outskirts, 2021), where dedicated staff will provide informations and supprt to travelers.
APP AND TECHNOLOGY
To further assist commuters, ATA will modify apps like Google Maps and Apple Maps (based on terms and conditions thereof) with real-time information of substitutive bus schedules, service changes, and travel alternatives. The route planning feature (on "public transport" section) will help passengers find the best travel solutions during the renovation works
NIGHT SHUTTLE SERVICE
To ensure service continuity during nighttime hours, when demand is lower but significant, a night shuttle service (managed by ATA) has been introduced like on metro lines. These shuttles will connect major stations of Line A with other subway and suburban train lines, ensuring that passengers can travel without interruptions even at night.
MONITORING AND FEEDBACK
During the restructuring period, the ATA and AS will constantly monitor the situation to quickly identifies and resolve issues. Feedback channels have been set up to allow passengers to report disruptions and suggest improvements. This feedback will be critical to adapting and optimizing the replacement plan in progress.
COLLABORATIO WITH LOCAL AUTHORITIES
To better coordinate operations, the ATA and AS will work closely with local authorities and municipal police to manage traffic and ensure safety in the areas affected by the replacement works and services. Special measures are in place to minimise traffic jams and ensure that substitutive buses can operate without significant delays.

Archema, July 15, 2024 - With the start of the renovation of Line A to convert it into the new Metro Line 5, ATA and AS have outlined a precise schedule for the works, operational tests, and the official public opening. Here are the anticipated milestones for this crucial transformation of the city's transport network.
COMPLETION OF RENOVATION WORKS: END OF 2025
The renovation of Line A will begin at the start of 2025, with an intensive program involving upgrades to stations, tracks, signaling system, and electrical infrastructure. On May 2, 2025, we closed Line A to undertake infrastructure renovation work. Line A opened on August 16, 1925, 100 years ago. This centennial was celebrated with a free tour of the line to see the current state of progress. Line A, like its sister lines, Lines B and C, was built to the railway standards of the time: platforms were not raised and lacked tactile surfaces, and only a few stations were made accessible over time. Lines B and C underwent modernization and accessibility work between 2001 and 2003, like the rest of the metro lines. Unfortunately, due to funding cuts, the Municipality was forced to abandon Line A, the least frequented at the time. The modernization work therefore began on May 2, with a delay of almost five months due to more thorough structural preparation than expected. To date, work is progressing faster than scheduled, and the reopening is expected in October 2026, rather than June of the same year.
