At the 13EPUCG2023, discover more about pathology and digital pathology.

Defining pathology:

In the field of medicine known as pathology, diseases are studied and diagnosed by examining surgically removed organs, tissues, bodily fluids, and, in some cases, the entire body (autopsy). A bodily specimen's gross anatomical composition, the appearance of the cells using immunological markers, and the chemical signatures in the cells can all be taken into account. The related scientific study of disease processes, known as pathology, looks at the causes, mechanisms, and severity of disease. Cellular responses to injury, necrosis (the death of living cells or tissues), inflammation, wound healing, and neoplasia are among the topics of study (abnormal new growth of cells).

Pathologists diagnose the vast majority of cases of cancer because they are experts in a variety of illnesses, including cancer. Under a microscope, the cellular structure of tissue samples is examined to determine whether or not they are cancerous (benign). Additionally, pathologists use genetic research and gene markers to evaluate various diseases.

Digital pathology definition:

A research pipeline can benefit from digital pathology technologies in two ways. First, tissue microarrays, whole slide images, and macroscopic digital photos can all be organised using the file storage and viewing programmes mentioned above. In multicentre studies with a central pathology review, this is helpful. Tissue banks can also include a virtual slide bank in their resource to facilitate collaboration. The Cancer Digital Slide Atlas, a component of the Cancer Genome Atlas, is credited with developing this strategy (pathology.universeconferences.com)

The creation and use of image analysis methods is the second way that digital pathology is used in research. Algorithms can identify nuclei, stroma, architectural details, or even particular cell types, like lymphocytes, and use this information to group pixels within an image based on how similar they are to their neighbours. Additional manipulation of these groups enables objective staining calculation, which is helpful in quantitatively evaluating hyperchromatic in conventionally stained slides or antigen expression by immunohistochemistry. This offers the chance to measure binary or categorical traits on a continuous scale with a potentially higher level of accuracy and reproducibility, such as low or high grade dysplasia. https://pathology.universeconferences.com/

Multiple features in an image can be measured using a combination of image analysis algorithms. Many of these characteristics, such as the orientation (in degrees) of the nuclei in relation to one another, the distance between the nuclei, the precise proportion of tumour and stroma, the level of nuclear membrane irregularity, and the absolute nuclear area, cannot be easily evaluated by the naked eye. In statistical models that forecast clinical variables like response to treatment, survival, and tumour recurrence, each of these characteristics can be measured on a continuous scale and given varying weights. This method is known as "tissue-omics," which implies a relationship with other big data methods like genomics, proteomics, and metabolomics.
