Welcome to the ASUMH Faculty Resource Guide for Open Educational Resources (OER) and ZTC (Zero Textbook Cost) Resources!
This website will act as a central hub where faculty can easily discover open educational resources and Zero Textbook Cost (ZTC) materials suited to their specific disciplines. Even if you’re already using a textbook, there may be additional resources that could enrich your curriculum—so feel free to explore! While we can’t showcase every available open resource or ZTC option, our goal is to provide valuable choices that can enhance your teaching. It’s important for instructors to evaluate whether a given resource aligns with their instructional goals, learning outcomes, and licensing needs.
If your course isn't listed yet, please be patient and check back regularly. We're working to ensure that open resources will eventually be accessible for all courses. If you have a special request for a certain resource that isn't already listed, please let me know. Email me at hlagoy@asumh.edu.
Understanding OER
The United Nations Education and Scientific Organization (UNESCO) defines Open Educational Resources as "learning, teaching, and research materials in any format and medium that reside in the public domain or are under copyright that have been released under an open license, that permit no-cost access, re-use, re-purpose, adaptation, and redistribution by others."
Understanding ZTC or No Cost
"Zero Textbook Cost" (ZTC) or "Zero Textbook Resources" refers to educational courses or materials that do not require students to purchase traditional textbooks. Instead, these courses use free, open-access resources such as:
Open Educational Resources (OER): Free, openly licensed materials like textbooks, videos, and exercises that can be freely accessed, modified, and shared.
Online resources: Free articles, research papers, websites, or multimedia content.
Library resources: Materials provided through the university or institutional library system that students can access without extra cost.
The idea behind zero textbook cost is to eliminate the financial barrier of buying expensive textbooks, making education more affordable and accessible.
