The Laboratory of Astronomy is part of the Section of Astro-geophysics (Section I) in the Department of Physics at the University of Ioannina, Greece. It currently (March 2025) consists of three permanent faculty members, two professors emeriti, five postdoctoral researchers, seven PhD students, and one MSc student.
Research is conducted on a variety of Solar Physics topics, including dynamic physical processes in the Sun and Space Weather phenomena. The underlying physics of these processes is examined using a multitude of methods, namely solar observations from both ground and space assets as well as numerical simulations. Plasma Physics is also studied in both solar and laboratory milieu.
The Laboratory of Astronomy has organized numerous conferences, workshops, international research teams, and educational schools, promoting collaboration and advancements in astronomical research. It has been also involved in numerous national and international projects, organizations and teams.
