One of the most important aspects of healing and becoming able to re-enter society is forming strong relationships and allowing budding friendships to bloom. This is one of the major aspects promoted by Oceandrop Program, which is why each participating student has been housed in the school's own dormitory even if they happened to already live in Road's End. By being able to get-along with different sorts of people you learn empathy and with empathy comes understanding the viewpoints of others, something sorely needed if one wants to be successful in life anywhere one goes.
In the roleplay the aspect of relationships is portrayed by Friendships. Friendships are something like social links, webs of interpersonal relations that you form with other players and non-player characters. While Friendships between player characters are solely dependent on the players themselves, with non-player characters it works a bit differently. With each non-player character you meet, you will form a Friendship with a specific Rank. This Rank represents how good your relationship with a given non-player character is. The higher the Rank, the more highly the non-player character thinks of you and the more they want to spend time with you. Higher Ranks also mean that the non-player character is willing to go further for your sake, such as allying themselves with you without any incentive, helping you out when you are hurt, defending you against those who'd harm you and even taking a blow for you if it comes to that. Extremely close Friendships might even allow weaving abilities, even different kinds, together to create combination attacks. There are no downsides to having high Friendship Ranks with lots of people, so try to foster them with care... but only with those who you think are worth it. Then again, you never know. Those who might be jerks to you initially might have some hidden depths to them once they open up to you more.
Initially, without Perks, each Friendship you make starts with a Rank F. This means that you have barely met someone and that non-player character might not even remember your name. By spending time with that non-player character, giving them gifts or saying just the right thing will advance this Friendship. Some actions may also reduce a non-player character's Rank, but never to the point that it will lower to the previous Rank. This is because between each Ranks there are something like points to be tallied. Tally enough points and you will advance to the next Rank... at least usually. For example, to move from Rank F to Rank E in Friendship, one must gain 1 point of this sort to raise the Rank. Each subsequent Rank will require double the amount of points from the previous one. So from Rank E to Rank D it would require 2 points, from Rank D to Rank C it would require 4 points and so on.
Here is a non-comprehensive list of some actions that may affect your point value regarding a Friendship with a non-player character.
Remember that these actions and points are not iron-clad and should not be thought as a video-game-like mechanic of a relationship value. Instead they are there to give you an idea what sorts of things you can do if you want to be better friends with someone. Nobody can forcibly be someone's friend, after all.
Speaking of which, there is also a way to break a Friendship. A Broken Friendship represents a negative relationship, caused either by mutual hatred, being betrayed or emotionally manipulated... or just about anything, really! People are complicated creatures, after all. A Broken Friendship means that a character will actively start to work against you out of personal spite and you lose all chances of ever increasing that specific Friendship again. There are few extremely rare ways to mend Broken Friendships, but they are hard to find and even they cannot mend a Friendship that's been broken twice. Thus, be careful on how you behave towards people. A broken heart is not a force to be underestimated.
Lastly, here is a list of the Ranks of Friendship it is possible to achieve and a general gist of what they mean as a relationship.
