The ASTRO-EDU Workshop 2026 is the first international face-to-face workshop of the Erasmus+ project ASTRO-EDU: Empowering Teachers as STEAM Communicators in Astronomy Education. Hosted by the Project Partner Hellenic Physics Society (EEF) in the beautiful island setting of Aegina, Greece, this week-long event will bring together project partners, invited experts, and pilot teachers from across Europe and Mediterranean to collaboratively shape the future of astronomy education.
The expert sprint workshop marks an important milestone in the project by launching the co-design process for the ASTRO-EDU Toolkit, an open collection of inquiry-based, curriculum-aligned educational resources that will support teachers in delivering engaging astronomy and STEAM learning experiences.
The ASTRO-EDU Workshop 2026 is organised by ASTRO-EDU Erasmus+ Project consortium and hosted by the Project Partner Hellenic Physics Society (EEF) in the beautiful island setting of Aegina, Greece, between 11 – 17 October 2026.
ASTRO-EDU Project follows a collaborative design approach in which researchers, teacher educators, classroom teachers, and astronomy education experts work together from the very beginning of the project. Rather than developing resources in isolation, the Expert Sprint creates an environment where diverse expertise can be combined to ensure that all educational materials are scientifically accurate, pedagogically sound, classroom-tested, and adaptable to different educational contexts.
During the workshop, participants will exchange ideas, share best practices, and develop innovative educational activities that connect astronomy with science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics (STEAM).
This workshop aims to:
establish a shared vision for the ASTRO-EDU educational framework;
co-design the first modules of the ASTRO-EDU Toolkit;
identify and evaluate high-quality astronomy education resources;
align activities with the Big Ideas in Astronomy and European school curricula;
develop inquiry-based and project-based classroom activities;
define teacher competencies and professional development pathways;
prepare pilot implementations in participating countries;
strengthen collaboration among project partners, experts, and pilot teachers.
The diversity of participants ensures that the toolkit reflects both current educational research and the practical realities of classroom teaching.
By the end of the workshop, participants will have produced:
the initial framework of the ASTRO-EDU Toolkit;
draft classroom activities for pilot implementation;
curriculum mapping documents;
guidelines for inquiry-based astronomy teaching;
recommendations for teacher professional development;
a roadmap for the next stages of project implementation.
These outcomes will serve as the foundation for the toolkit that will be refined, tested in classrooms, and made freely available as Open Educational Resources.
The Mediterranean Regional IAU-OAE Workshop on Astronomy for Education (MASTED2026) will be held jointly between 14 – 17 October 2026 in Aegina Island, Greece. The workshop is being organised by The IAU Office of Astronomy for Education Center Italy (I-OAE), in collaboration with the Hellenic Physical Society, the NAEC Greece, the NOC Greece teams and ASTRO-EDU Erasmus+ Project consortium. The Mediterranean Regional IAU-OAE Workshop on Astronomy for Education (MASTED2026) is an annual event of The IAU Office of Astronomy for Education Center Italy (I-OAE) creating a collaborative environment and a permanent community which includes almost all the countries of the Mediterranean area.
ASTRO-EDU: Empowering Teachers as STEAM Communicators in Astronomy Education is a three-year Erasmus+ KA220-SCH partnership funded by the European Union, coordinated by Istanbul Kültür University and implemented with Istituto Nazionale di Astrofisica, University of Malta, Osnovna škola Pantovčak, Global Hands-on Universe Association, and Hellenic Physics Society, aiming to strengthen astronomy education through innovative STEAM approaches. The project empowers primary and secondary teachers and preservice educators by enhancing their astronomy content knowledge, inquiry-based pedagogy, digital literacy, and science communication skills. Through the co-design of an open, multilingual inquiry-based ASTRO-EDU Toolkit, intensive professional development programs, and community outreach activities, the consortium will foster interdisciplinary learning, increase student engagement in STEM, and establish a sustainable international network of astronomy educators and ambassadors, contributing to improved scientific literacy and inclusive science education across Europe.
