Utilizing areas of occupation, based off the Occupational Therapy Practice Framework: Domain and Process 4th Edition (2020), participants will learn how to foster independence for independent living, postsecondary training and education, and competitive integrated employment. Independent living, postsecondary training and education, and competitive integrated employment are areas addressed for transition age students, beginning at age 14, on an Ohio individualized education plan, commonly referred to as an IEP (Ohio Department of Education, 2023). Each lesson will focus on teaching self-advocacy skills focusing on self awareness and demonstrate how assistive technology can be used effectively as a tool to achieve independence. Each topic will include a brief learning session (lecture) followed by hands-on exploration of assistive technology tools. Students will complete self-assessment in each area to develop relevant and personalized goals. Students will develop their own personal resource binder of goals and assistive technology solutions.
