The SETT framework is a tool educators can use to collect the information they need to make informed decisions about the tools and services they can use to support students with disabilities or developmental delays.
Using the SETT framework can help us to think about the student, environment and the tasks that children need to be able to accomplish BEFORE we start thinking about the tools we can use to support them.
Areas of concern, developmental delay or need
Student's current abilities and areas of strength
Student's preferences and interests
Structural and physical
Supports for students and staff
Equipment
Access to technology
Expectations of teachers and family
Specific tasks the student needs to accomplish
Specific tasks are required for active involvement
List of specific tools that addresses student needs
Compare/contrast features and benefits of tools
List supports or services needed to accompany tools
Plan when/how tools will be used
Shared Knowledge of the student, the environment, and the task is used when choosing AT devices, tools and supports.
Collaboration of all those involved (student, teachers/support staff/family).
Communication between all involved is respectful and valued.
Multiple Perspectives by bringing different knowledge, skills, experience, and ideas to the table (student, teachers/support staff/family).
