It's likely that you are concerned about the health of an elderly relative or loved one. It's your desire for this person to be healthy and active, but he/she just doesn't seem motivated.
WELL, YOU'RE NOT ALONE. There are thousands of loving friends, family members, and daughters who care about elderly people. I'm sure you have tried everything to help but with mixed results. Maybe you even decided it was futile and nothing can be done. You can still make an impact on elderly people's lives by helping them to be active and involved in their surroundings.
Here are some tips to help an older person stay active and engaged in society.
1. You can't force an elderly person to exercise or be active. It will not work if you try to coerce an elderly person into exercising. Being patient and friendly is much more effective than being confrontational.
2. Inform the elderly about the benefits and importance of exercise. Don't assume the elderly person knows why exercise is so important. Find ways to guide your conversations towards related issues by giving her literature.
3. You should encourage the elderly person you know to try something she enjoyed in the past.
4. Sometimes, it can be useful to break down tasks so that the elderly person is not overwhelmed. You could start by walking to the mailbox. This will lead you to walk down the street.
5. If the elderly person successfully completes an activity, be kind and supportive. The elderly need to be acknowledged. It can be a great way to motivate seniors to keep doing the activity.
6. You can participate with an elderly person so that she does not feel uneasy or in pain. If you are having fun and enjoying being with the elderly person, tell her.
7. If you suspect that an elderly person might be refusing to participate in activities due to medical reasons, talk to your doctor. Sometimes an older person may be hesitant to admit that she isn't feeling well.
Remember patience and perseverance are the most important things when trying to help an elderly friend, loved one, or relative to be more involved in their daily lives. It is vital to determine WHY your loved one or friend is reluctant to participate in activities. Then, develop your INTERVENTIONS.
