Online courses should offer lots (think weekly) chances for formative assessment. These assessments might be lower stakes in terms of points, but they are high value for learning.

This video has a lot of examples of different kinds of assignments you may want to adapt for your course. It does present some new technologies, but you can always adapt the style of the assessment to something you already use. For example, instead of using an outside blog tool, use Padlet or the discussion board in Canvas.
