Race in Iberia SYMPOSIUM 2024 - Call for Papers

November 7-9, 2024 at The Ohio State University

Submission Deadline: May 15, 2024

Keynote Speakers

Paloma Chen is a Spanish poet, journalist, and creative producer. Her creative works include Invocación a las mayorías silenciosas (2021) and the YouTube testimonial series, Crecer en ‘un chino.’ She won the II Premio Nacional de Poesía Viva in 2021.

Her creative work includes Ingenuidade Inocência Ignorância (2021) and slam poetry performed at Portugal SLAM – International Festival of Poetry and Performance, of which she was also coordinator and artistic director between 2012 and 2017.

We are delighted to invite submissions for the Race in Iberia Symposium at The Ohio State University, hosted by TRECE (Taller de Raza, Etnicidad, y Ciudadanía en España) in partnership with the Iberian Studies section of the Department of Spanish and Portuguese. This is TRECE’s second symposium; the first was held at Northwestern University in 2022.

Founded on the premise that racial diversity is a permanent feature of contemporary Spanish society, TRECE is a scholarly network that aims to promote the critical study of race in Spain. This year, the scope of the TRECE symposium will be expanded to include a comparative focus on Spain and Portugal, an effort that seeks to broaden our understanding of racial processes in a larger Iberian context.

The three-day event will bring together a diverse cohort of experts dedicated to anti-racist scholarship, pedagogy, art, and activism within and beyond Spain and Portugal. It will also feature keynote speakers including Paloma Chen and guest speakers.
