Aboriginal & Torres Strait Knowledges through Stories and Song 

Award-winning Aboriginal and Torres Strait musician and cultural historian Jessie Lloyd is well known through her Mission Songs Project. Resources from this project are widely used by primary and secondary teachers across Australia.

In this workshop, Jessie will share stories and songs that are an introduction to First Nations histories and cultures from her forthcoming Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Songbook. Topics covered include:

• Language and Welcome songs

• Traditional dances

• Indigenous instrumentation

• Songs that explain the flags

• Her family’s story of Stolen Generation through song

The songs shared are public songs and can be taught by First Nations and non-Indigenous educators.

Electronic Music Pedagogy

Many of our students love listening to electronic music. It forms the foundation of most popular

music today, but rarely features in school music programs. Drawing on current academic

research and observations from student workshops in over 20 countries, ‘Electronic Music

Pedagogy’ is a flexible approach for your classroom based on ‘how electronic musicians learn’.

We’ll get hands-on with both hardware and software in this session and provide a bunch of

starting points and potential units of work for you to explore in 2025. This will be fun, creative

and learner-centred!

Informal Music-Making/Popular Music pedagogies in primary and secondary schools

Get ready to jam! In this session we will experience ‘informal learning’ through making music

together. We will explore a range of resources from Musical Futures that will help our students

work towards unleashing a creative and personal approach to making music. This powerful

pedagogical approach has helped to improve student engagement, agency and fun in hundreds

of schools around Australia.

Participants will be involved in a sample practical primary music lesson involving a group creative process in which the focus is on inclusion and differentiation. Ideas for assessing, recording and reporting on student progress will be modelled.

Felicity will take a deep dive into resources that have been developed by the Department of Education to support the implementation of the Victorian Teaching and Learning Model 2.0 across the primary curriculum. Felicity will offer practical activities for immediate use as examples.
