Vale: Dr. Frances Elliott
WORDS BY JANE SOUTHCOTT
WORDS BY JANE SOUTHCOTT
Professor Jane Southcott (School of Education, Culture and Society, Monash University) shares her reflections of student-turned-colleague, Dr. Frances Elliott.
With sadness I share the passing of Dr. Frances Elliott.
She was a strong, resilient woman, possessed of a sharp mind and high standards. Frances taught music and French language both in schools and in her studio. I was fortunate to meet her in 2009 when she began a Master of Education by Research which evolved into her doctoral studies three years later.
Her thesis was entitled “An Examination of the Work of Studio Music Teachers as a Contribution to the Musical Life of Victoria, 1900-1950.” Frances was a delight to supervise and over time we became friends.
Frances completed the doctorate when she was 88 years old in 2018. Since then, we have continued to talk and write. Our last publication together appeared in the most recent issue of the Australian Journal of Music Education, “Teaching Four Funny Frogs for piano by Miriam Hyde.”
I will miss our regular conversations. Frances made an impact of all she met, being described at her funeral as a “small lady, big personality.”
Farewell Frances, you will be missed.
