CODA's Historic Oscar Win
I started my initiative after I noticed the lack of ASL inclusion. My nephew is deaf, and after living with him and spending time outside of the house with him, I came to realize that there was a very little amount of ASL knowledge in younger children. After the pandemic had made communication for the deaf with the hearing so much more difficult, I decided to try and help. I found 12 students who were interested in ASL and taught them ASL, deaf information, and interesting facts for 6 weeks. Since my class, many of my students have continued to pursue learning ASL and growing their knowledge of the Deaf community.
My goal with both my class and this website is to expand the knowledge and interest of the Deaf community, ASL, and what they have to go through living in a hearing-based world. I am hoping that with this site and other social media, people will have more concerns about these topics and will decide to go out and help fight for change. It is important that all minority communities and groups are seen, heard, and offered assistance in their journey of gaining equality and equity. If I can spark inspiration in just one person to go out and make a change, I will have accomplished the goal I am trying too hard to achieve.
