Sustainable Creative Programs for children with special needs

Context and Issue
Students with special needs in Vietnam often have a hard time learning due to the lack of an educational environment specifically designed to suit their intellectual capacity. Due to the tradition of rote learning and financial constraints, teachers in many of Vietnam's provinces do not receive proper training to effectively help students with special needs.
At the School for students with Disabilities of Tay Ninh, Long Thanh Nam quarter, Vietnam, the fine motor ability of many students in kindergarten and grade 1 (70% of 90 students) is still limited due to late detection of their special needs and intervention.
Art for Everyone adopts creative learning with an aim to help students exercise their body and mind, as well as increase their attention. The project also supports training teachers to approach new teaching models and build a set of teaching frameworks to personally connect and help students grow.

Constructive, enlightening, and flexible are what best describe Ai’s experience in Arts for Everyone as a 2021 ASII grantee.
Ai’s motivation to set up Arts for Everyone stemmed from her wish to create a learning environment that combines emotional development and activity, helping students develop their perspectives and bring positive energy to others.
Understanding the lack of support to students with special needs in Vietnam and the need for teacher training in this section, in 2021, Arts for Everyone has:
Conducted workshop guiding 20 teachers in Tay Ninh to from incorporating mindfulness into learning sessions, building effective syllabi based on scientific research on child development, to running mock classes.
Build framework for students’ activities facilitation and teaching syllabi
Ai sees the experiences, resources and support from the ASII program as a life-changing opportunity that has confirmed her objectives in bringing arts-related programs to Vietnam’s education in the next 5 years.
Lean Ai's stories
Ai is a journalist with a passion for art and creative education. She believes education is the platform through which art can reach and guide more students towards creativity and self-awareness.
Students should not only learn to understand themselves and their learning environment but also develop their creativity and curiosity. With this in mind, she plans to bring arts into schools for students with special needs in Tay Ninh, where students still lack the resources and access to creative programs. In years to come, she hopes to pilot the model at 4 other provinces in Vietnam.
