Quintessence is the annual tech fest organised by the department of Electronics and Communication Engineering, Government Engineering College, Thrissur. It was a great opportunity to work on some really fun projects, under the guidance of some amazing seniors. Thank you to all my seniors and faculty for making Q20 possible!
Solenoid valves are used to control the flow of water. They are controlled using an arduino through a MOSFET driver. They are switched fast enough to create small drops. An LED strip is also controlled by the arduino through a MOSFET driver circuit. The LED strip is flashed at a particular frequency. When the frequency of creating drops match the frequency of the LED strip flashing, The drops appear to stand still. Changing the speed at which drops are created can create the illusion of water slowly falling or even rising!

A fun exhibit in which stepping on a step of a staircase would create a note corresponding to that step. Be careful not to trip, though!
An optical system using lasers and LDRs are used here to detect footsteps on the stairs. The LDR is connected in a potential divider configuration with another resistor and then to a comparator. The comparator output is given to an arduino. The arduino uses the tone() function to generate the notes on an output pin, which is given to a speaker.
