To measure anxiety level in the mice, I used a duration coding method by measuring the amount of time the mouse spent within a body's width of the wall (about 1 inch from the wall to the side of the mouse closest to the wall). If the mouse was facing away from the wall, I used the distance from the wall to the closest point on the mouse's body, not including the tail. Each mouse was given a score of total duration of time that it was close to the wall. The mouse that had the highest score would be assumed to have the highest level of anxiety.
