Hey look! You've found Mr. Ashlock's AP Statistics site. You're probably here for homework solutions, or calendars. Those can be found through the links up top. Here are some other things you might want to know:
What's this course all about?
We'll learn the entire statistical process. That means starting with the methods of gathering data, detecting bias in those methods, analyzing trends with calculator models, using those models to predict or estimate unknown parameters, and measuring the level of confidence in those predictions.
What do I need for this course?
I have a class set of TI-84 calculators, but many of the assignments require you to use a calculator at home. If you already have a TI-83 or TI-84, you should be good to go. If not, consider buying one if you think you'll need it again for future courses. The library has a few they can check out, too. Come and talk to me if you're having trouble deciding what or where to buy.
How heavy is the course-load?
This is a college-level course, so if you want to do well, expect to spend quite a bit of time outside of class doing assignments and going over the day's notes. There's a lot more writing and analysis in statistics than you're probably used to in other math classes, so some students find the adjustment difficult. It's best to think of this course as more of a science class rather than a math class.
Why am I taking this class?
Statistics is probably the most popular upper-level math course across all college degree requirements. It shows up in everything from math degrees (obviously), to biology, business, education, medicine, and journalism. Most people fall into one of three categories. They either (1) want to take as many math classes in high school as possible, (2) finished Algebra II or Pre-Calculus but have no intention of ever taking Calculus, or (3) just picked it at random. If you fall into that third camp, please realize that there is a lot of work required in this course, and if you were looking to take it easy during your senior year, this is not the right class for you.
