Project 3
Synopsis:
Today I will be analyzing Chris Brown’s song “Privacy”. Throughout the video it portrays a group of women doing very provocative and explicit dance moves while wearing revealing clothing as he sings provocative and sexual lyrics about things, he sexually wants to do to her. This video currently has 201Million views and since the release of this song he has been receiving a lot of back lash and controversy over it. It seems as in today’s day and age it is common for artist to sing and rap about such provocative things and to use women as a sort of sex symbol is their visuals.
Women dancing sexually to lyrics. (Figure 1)
Walking out the elevator.( Figure 2)
Sexual angles:
From the screenshot you can see the women in very revealing clothing doing sexual dances as he sings the lyrics “Hey you girl with the tight up skirt get that a** in the bed…”. In Kilbourne article she states “Sex in advertising is pornographic because it dehumanizes and objectifies people, especially women...”
(Kilbourne pg. 420 paragraph 2). To me this image is very dehumanizing to women because it portrays them to be just like sex toys. As if women are only good enough to please the man physically and to be eye catching. Not only is it bad enough that they are looked at in that way, but other women can take offense to these images. This image can really mess with a women’s self-esteem because all the women in the image seems to have very nice body features like boobs and butt and tend to all be from the Hispanic race. Which can make women who do not have those body features feel a certain way about this feel as if their body is not beautiful because it is not portrayed in most videos. It can also make a black woman a white woman, Asian etc. feel as if their skin is not what most people want to see. In figure two you can see as he exits the elevator, he looks at the women as if she is some type of treat or snack that he wants to eat. Looking at her as if he is fetishizing her because of her features what is about to take place. A few seconds after he looks at the camera gives a grin then winks. As a woman watches that she probably feels as if she is being looked at as an easy object for a man to play with instead of an actual human who does have feelings.
Sitting on top of his lap (Figure 4)
Walking down the hall (Figure 3)
Domination:
In this image (figure 3) you can see the female walking down the hall as he follows her. You can see she has her butt out in this shot. This shot indicates her leading him into the “Private” room as he follows her like a puppy. While the lyrics state" You know I go crazy when your legs be in the air” indicating that he doesn’t know how to control himself while they do sexual activities. Now looking at this image it shows the women on top of him as if she is in control. When he was enjoying being “controlled” by a woman. "Male violence is subtly encouraged by ads that encourage men to be forceful and dominant"(Kilbourne, Pg. 489 Paragraph 3). I chose this quote because I feel as if the two images I chose goes with It because in both pictures it shows he’s not in control but in actuality he is because he still feels dominate in the situation. Now in this image you can see her on top of his lap pulling him in close. While he looks at her like he is just fascinated by her taking control. In this part he sings sexual lyrics about the things he wants to sexually do to her. While the picture does not show dominance, the lyrics do.
Conclusion:
Throughout the entire video you can see women dancing provocatively and dressing in very skimpy clothing barely covering anything. As the artist Chris brown sings very sexual lyrics. The video can portray women in a very dehumanizing and untasteful way and can take a huge tole on a women’s self-esteem and how they feel about their physical appearance and how they think men view them. In different screenshots it can make women of different ethnic backgrounds feel like they are not good enough or are not appreciated enough. While some will make them feel insecure or not happy with how they look weight wise or by their body features. Which can take a toll on a women’s self-esteem especially in today’s day and age.
