The 2019 ASF council approved the purchase of some equipment for use of ASF members heading off on expeditions.
Loans are available to members of ASF corporate members (usually, clubs) or individual ASF members.
- delivery costs, if the equipment cannot be picked up and returned at the equipment caretaker.
- call fees on the satphone
- repair of any damage to the items
Clearly, this equipment can improve outcomes in the event of an accident, however, expedition members must be able to use the equipment. Training in its use and refresher practice with the equipment is essential.
The ASF equipment caretaker will arrange training for the person who picks up the equipment, but it is their responsibility to pass that training to other members of the expedition.
With respect to the stretcher, it is strongly recommended that expedition members have previously trained in first aid, patient packaging, and movement of the stretcher in the kind of cave environments that the expedition is operating in. Many cave managers have mandated current first aid certification.
Various cave clubs and the NSW Cave Rescue Squad offer training in rescue techniques each year. It is strongly recommended that expedition members have participated in this training, recently.
Ensure that you keep us informed if your dates change at all – expedition planning is always a movable feast!

Note that these people are cavers and volunteers – they deserve your respect and for you to make things as easy as possible. They will also go away, but they’ll arrange a replacement when they do!
