Introduction
About us :
The Asclepius Medical Camp for Youth was founded in 2009 by University of Alberta medical students as an initiative to increase enrollment of students from low socioeconomic backgrounds in medical school.
Our Mission :
To expose youth from populations that are currently under-represented in medical schools to the field of medicine
To prove that medicine is a possible career, regardless of background
To remove any mystery surrounding the medical field
To pique students’ interest in medicine as a career
Why do we care?
Students of low socioeconomic background are currently under-represented in Canadian medical schools
Almost 20% of medical students come from households earning > $160,000/year
Only 2.7% of the Canadian population falls into this income bracket
Students of low socioeconomic status are more likely to work in under-serviced, low-income communities
