On Saturday, May 11, the Gloucester City Helping Hands Food Pantry, housed at Church of the Ascension, was the recipient of the overwhelming generosity of people in the surrounding area through the Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive. The Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive is a charitable initiative conducted by the United States Postal Service, National Rural Letter Carriers' Association & National Association of Letter Carriers in the United States to make significant donations of food to organizations serving needy persons.
Only some of the food received on May 11 has been sorted and shelved. Every available space in the parish hall now has bags, boxes and containers of food. Thanks to the students, the shelves in the rectory (where the pantry is located) are filled.
The Helping Hands Pantry has served residents of Gloucester City and Brooklawn in need for well over twenty years. Food donations are received from individuals, churches, local businesses, civic and community organizations. On average, the pantry serves 80-175 persons per week.
Church of the Ascension, Gloucester City is fully committed to the Five Marks of Mission, and one of living out this call is by responding to human need by loving service.
