FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
ANNOUNCEMENT OF PHASE II OF THE RESTRUCTURED TRANSPORTATION MODEL
24 October, 2024
Good Afternoon,
We are excited to announce the next phase of our student transportation program, which builds upon the successes of the hybrid model introduced in September. Starting this November, Phase II of the program will go into effect, offering even greater flexibility and affordability to ensure all students have reliable access to transportation, particularly as we experience the drop in temperatures.
In partnership with the City of Sioux Falls and Sioux Area Metro (SAM), we are pleased to confirm that the negotiated ride costs will remain highly affordable, with SAM On-Demand and bus rides capped at no more than $1.50 per ride. This adjustment marks a transition from the fully free SAM transportation model we previously offered to a cost-share model. The new model ensures students still have access to affordable transportation options while balancing the fiscal realities of the program and the real world.
To further support students during the colder months, ASA Executive has decided to provide four additional Lyft passes for the remainder of the semester. These passes are intended to cover any transportation needs outside SAM's operating hours or when the weather makes walking or waiting for transit less practical.
With our recent changes to the transportation model, aimed at creating a more sustainable and equitable system, we have seen increased collaboration among students through carpooling and reduced single-occupancy vehicle use. This shift aligns with our strategic plan, where we are continuously working towards integrating additional ride-share platforms and sustainable transportation mediums. These efforts reflect our commitment to environmental sustainability and community cooperation. You can track the progress of Phase II of the strategic plan here.
Augustana Student Association remains one of the few—if not the only—student governments in the country that provides such extensive ride benefits to students in need. We take pride in leading the way and will continue to explore opportunities to increase benefits and expand services while remaining mindful of what other student governments are offering in the context of higher education.
The Viking Lyft passes will expire on January 31, 2025, as we prepare for the next stage of the program, Phase III, which will be introduced in January. Additional measures will be implemented to make the program even more equitable and accessible will follow in the coming months.
As always, we are committed to continuously evaluating the program's performance and making adjustments as needed to better serve our community.
