STATEMENT FROM ASA PRESIDENT ANNIE JOHNSTON & VP PRINCE ADHIKARI REGARDING THE TRAGIC LOSS FACED BY OUR VALUED COMMUNITY MEMBER, GABRIELLE AMROUNI 

10 October, 2024 

On Wednesday, October 23, 2024, during a bright day in South Africa, our friend and fellow community member, Gabrielle Amrouni and her sister Alexia experienced an unimaginable tragedy, losing both their parents in a sudden shooting incident. Our hearts are profoundly heavy as we reflect on the grief and hardships that lie ahead for these sisters. Gabrielle, who is a dedicated student here at Augustana University, is now faced with the urgent need to be with her family in South Africa, offering mutual support during this incredibly difficult time.

Our mission as a Lutheran institution calls us to respond with compassion and to serve our neighbors in their times of need. We are reaching out to the Augustana and broader community to join us in supporting Gabrielle and Alexia. Any donation, regardless of the amount, will go directly to covering Gabrielle’s travel expenses to South Africa, supporting her and Alexia’s daily needs, and eventually helping Gabrielle return to her studies here at Augustana as she continues working toward a brighter future.

Let us unite as a community, moved by the values of love, service, and support that define us, to help these sisters find strength on this difficult journey. Thank you for keeping them in your thoughts and prayers, and for any contribution you are able to make in their time of need.
