FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
STATEMENT FROM ASA PRESIDENT ANNIE JOHNSTON & VP PRINCE ADHIKARI ON DIWALI, THE FESTIVAL OF LIGHTS
29 October, 2024
As we celebrate Diwali, the Festival of Lights, we reflect on the profound significance of this occasion, which symbolizes the victory of light over darkness and knowledge over ignorance. Diwali is not merely a celebration for the Hindu, Sikh, Jain and Buddhist communities, it is a reminder for all of us at Augustana University of the values of compassion, unity, and resilience.
Diwali commemorates the return of Lord Rama to his kingdom after defeating the demon king Ravana, marking the triumph of good over evil. It is also a time to honor the goddess Lakshmi, who represents wealth and prosperity. This festival encourages us to recognize the importance of diversity within our campus community. It serves as an opportunity to honor the various cultural traditions that enrich our university experience and foster an environment of mutual respect and understanding.
Let us use this occasion to renew our commitment to inclusivity and collaboration. May the lights of Diwali inspire us to illuminate the paths of those around us with kindness and empathy.
Wishing you all a joyous and prosperous Diwali!
Annie and Prince
