FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
STATEMENT FROM ASA PRESIDENT ANNIE JOHNSTON & VP PRINCE ADHIKARI ON HINDU FESTIVAL OF NAVRATRI & NEPALESE FESTIVAL OF DASHAIN
10 October, 2024
As we celebrate the vibrant festival of Navratri and Dashain (also known as Vijaya Dashami), we take this opportunity to reflect on the richness of cultural diversity at our university. These festivals hold deep significance in Hindu tradition and embody values that resonate with our commitment to fostering an inclusive and welcoming campus community.
Navratri celebrates Goddess Durga's victory over the demon Mahishasura after a fierce nine-day battle, representing the triumph of good over evil. Each day is dedicated to different forms of Durga, invoking strength, courage, and devotion. It serves as a reminder of the power of feminine energy and the value of community support in overcoming challenges. Similarly, Dashain, one of the most important festivals in Nepal, symbolizes the triumph of good over evil, representing renewal, family unity, and the blessings of health and prosperity. It is a time for families to come together, strengthen bonds, and honor the divine. On this day, people receive tika (a mixture of yogurt, rice, and vermilion) and jamara (barley sprouts) on their foreheads as symbols of blessings for prosperity and longevity. Jamara is grown during the festival and symbolizes the blessings and outcome of the worship carried out over the preceding nine days.
At Augustana, we strive to create an environment that embraces all cultures and beliefs. The teachings inherent in these festivals align closely with the core values of the Lutheran tradition, which promotes love, service, and respect for all individuals. Both Navratri and Dashain inspire us to embody compassion, understanding, and support for one another.
As we honor these significant celebrations, we encourage our fellow students and community members to engage with and learn from one another's traditions. Let us celebrate together, recognizing that each festival not only enriches our lives but also enhances the diversity that defines Augustana University. We wish everyone a fulfilling conclusion to Navratri and a joyful Dashain, filled with hope, strength, and togetherness.
In unity and celebration,
Annie and Prince
