FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
CALL TO ACTION TO INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS BY THE ASA VICE PRESIDENT
31 October, 2024
To my dear friends here at Augustana from different corners of the globe,
As we navigate the election cycle, we find ourselves in a significant moment not only in the history of this country but also in the world. Though we cannot vote, I know that many of us have a vested interest in this election, which may be surrounded by anxiety and uncertainty. I am reminded of Augustana's deep history, a legacy built by Norwegian settlers who founded this institution over 160 years ago. Their journey was shaped by courage, faith, and an unwavering commitment to community, values that continue to guide Augustana’s mission and unite us across backgrounds, faiths, and cultures.
Today, as international students, we are part of this enduring story, carrying forward the core values of Christian, liberal arts, excellence, service, and community. My own experience as an international student has taught me the importance of embodying global citizenship. I encourage all of us to be curious, to learn, and to observe the values that make this country extraordinary—its ideals of democracy, freedom, and respect for diversity. Things might look different in this country and sometimes unusual, but this is not the time to judge; rather, it is an opportunity to be curious and to seek understanding.
Let us take a moment to appreciate the privilege of being here, in a country that champions individual rights and opportunities for all. This is a land where diverse voices come together to create a vibrant tapestry of cultures, ideas, and innovations. The principles of liberty and justice not only defines the identity of this nation, but also provides us with the framework to engage actively and responsibly in civic life.
I know that this election season can stir anxiety and uncertainty as we navigate it together. But let us take comfort in the words of Isaiah 41:10, which reminds us, "Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” With this assurance of God, we can face challenges with courage, anchored in faith and unity.
Our Global Leaders Scholarship is not just monetary assistance, rather it symbolizes our shared commitment to these values. It calls us to engage as leaders and learners, honoring the privilege of being in this great country and contributing meaningfully to our community.
In this election cycle, I urge each of us to embody openness, respect, and a readiness to listen. Let us honor Augustana’s legacy and our roles as global citizens, building a community rooted in unity, empathy, and purpose.
Thank you, and May God bless the United States of America!
ASA Vice President Prince Adhikari
