ASAGAO uncovers near-infrared-dark faint (sub)millimeter galaxies

ASAGAO ID-17, which is a secure detection, does not have any counterpart in the ultra-deep HST/F160W (H-band) and VLT/Hawk-I (Ks-band). Non-detection of JVLA 5 cm as well as faintness at IRAC bands (3.6 um and 4.5 um) suggest that this could be a z>3 source.

It has already been known that a fraction of bright submillimeter galaxies fall into the category "near-infrared-dark", like GOODS 850.5 or GN10 (e.g., Wang, W.-H., et al. 2009). However, ASAGAO ID-17 is ~10x fainter than such classical submilimeter galaxies; GN10 is a ~5 mJy source at 1.25 mm, whereas the 1.2 mm flux of ASAGAO ID-17 is 0.56+/-0.09 mJy. It implies that the abundance of such near-infrared-dark faint submm sources would also be significantly larger than bright NIR-dark submillimeter galaxies like GN10.
